2014 Tundra Died While Driving and Now Won't Start

My friend was driving his 2014 Tundra DC to work this morning and out of nowhere it started shaking and then stalled/died. He had to coast it to a safe spot to pull over. The truck has 230k miles on it and is regularly maintained. He had it towed to where we work and I was able to get a video of it cranking and trying to start. It's very noisy. We hooked a scan tool up to it and no codes. Any ideas of what could be going on with it?

Is that Rod knocking?? Inspect all cylinders for coolant/head gasket failure. Most likely cyl 7 or 8 where most common failures occur.

Edit: I'm no mechanic though, so its just my 2 cents.

 

She done, sound like a dropped/cracked valve. With the back firing out of the intake I would guess its a valve issue or a skipped timing chain.

 

Sounds like low compression and then there's the rattling when it kicks off. Valve train for sure. 230,000 miles isn't too bad.

 

That’s a weird sound. I have no idea what it could be, but please post if you ever get a diagnosis.

This is all kind of what I was thinking myself. Something definitely went bad in the top end.

I should mention as well, he has to pump the gas pedal to even get it to do what it's doing.

 

Fuel injectors?

 

Likely dropped a valve based on the most common failures reported here. Broken valve spring will cause the valve to fall down into the cylinder. Other potentials are timing chain issues due to failed tensioner. The hard start seems worse than single dropped valve honestly.

I cant say I've ever gotten that many miles out of a Truck!!!
Of course I usually trade em in at 60K when you can still get something out of them.
As I get older about the only thing that excites me is getting a new Truck!!
.......or maybe a new boat or rifle.
So the excitement has veringly different levels of excitement based on money spent....or speed and accuracy.

 

Official diagnosis is a dropped valve. Engine is done.

 

I wouldn't call that good. Last truck I had was wiped out by hurricane Harvey in '17, with 245K and still going strong. Present '13 Crewmax has 236K, and I'm expecting at least that much more.

Coworker has an 02 with over 500,000 miles and still going strong with ice cold air...

 

I'll be entirely satisfied if I get 230,000 trouble-free miles on my 5.7.

 

You can’t beat the old 2UZ engines for rock solid reliability. Million miles and beyond with proper maintenance.

As great as the 5.7L is, it definitely needs a stricter maintenance schedule especially coolant changes every 60k miles. And for my peace of mind, 3k mile / 6month oil changes.

 

Just curious, what's the going rate for a good used 5.7?

He's been looking at his options on where to go with this. For whatever reason Toyota spent the time to work up a quote to rebuild the engine, which came to $38k. LOL. Why would they even waste the time doing that on a truck that bluebooks for $14k.
He's going back and forth on putting a used engine back in it and either just keeping it or selling it or just cutting his losses and part it out and get something newer.

 

The money spent on a used engine will be worth it to save the truck if the rest of the truck is in great shape.

Ran the same from new till I sold.

The dealership should be ashamed of themselves. Just tell the customer you don’t want to be bothered.
