Been quite a while since I was in El Paso... and it was a dump way back then. I can't imagine what it's like now...

I’d use caution with the rear window defroster; 4Runners with the same type roll down window are notorious for shattered rear windows after using the defrost. Something like a stuck relay that never shuts off power, it gets to hot and shatters.

This is a diy cap I built 2 years ago. 3/4" steel frame with Aluminum Composite panels for the walls.

Not sure on your experience level, but im a beginner welder taught from youtube and I was able to build this thing and it has been seriously incredible! Cost me about $2k to build and another 1k for the interior and solar and all that other stuff. It was insanely fun to build and I learned a lot.

Yeah, my AC has defrosting side mirrors and when you need it, especially waking up in the morning in the mountains, after camping, and needing to drive off and your mirrors have condensate all over them, it'll clear 'em in 1-2 minutes. I never understood or thought I'd appreciate that feature as much as I do. I rarely use it, but when you need it, it beats the hell out of wiping the mirrors only to end up with both condensate and water drops.

Thanks for sharing. Ive been craving a camper, likely a pop up, for some time now. But dang it's hard to find the perfect one. Especially used.

Thats why I ended up building my own. Not only did I save a ton of money, but I made it mostly exactly how I wanted it and gave myself pop out windows which was the smartest decision ever. Cant imagine having a camper without pop out windows after having these!

Also so many pop up campers have the cab over style sleeping area. But our truck beds are long enough that you can sleep down below. Mine is setup so I sleep on a raised platform, but in the bed not up top in the tent area. Makes it so I can have it down (not popped up) when im sleeping. Either because of windy weather or trying to stay inconspicuous!

I made lots of trips to big bend when I was in college and went thru to LA one time. I was always getting pulled out of the truck and searched. We were camping so we always looked like hobos and it didn't help that I was driving a 90 suburban with a 2x6 for a rear bumper. It was rare for us to go thru a checkpoint and not have to get out.
