Best way to monitor trans temps

I recently picked up a 21 SR5 OR and I’m curious about watching my trans temps since I live in the mountains of AZ. I plugged my Edge CTS monitor from my other truck into the Tundra but it doesn’t show trans temps.
I recently picked up a Carista OBD plug just to customize a few of the dings/features.
Is there some way to use that and another app to view live trans temps while I drive? Or do I need something else?

I use OBD fusion with the Toyota plug ins.

 

You probably know that 2018 was the last year for Gen 2's to come with a Transmission cooler, I have a 2020 Tundra and added a Genuine Coolers trans cooler, it was pricey and I bought the OBD Fusion to monitor trans/trans pan and other systems. You can piece together a trans cooler for less than 500.00 and do it yourself in a few hours. Monitoring trans temps is pretty important and in AZ and in the hills I bet your temps will be pretty high. I've seen an average of 195-200 degrees max since I installed the cooler but I'm not towing anything either.
For just monitoring the temps I believe OBD Fusion is your best bet.

 

"Best" way is subjective, you have a few options.

OBD reader with an app on your phone is the cheapest, and you can get a lot of information. I thought about doing it this way but didn't want my phone tied up the whole time. You could use an old phone to monitor.

Scangauge (2 or 3) is another popular method. Also give you a lot of information and has it's own dedicated screen.

I chose option 3.

While slightly more expensive than options 1 and 2, it gave me an improvement in sound quality, better NAV, better voice control, Android Auto/Apple Carplay, and lets me... errr, I mean, my wife... watch Netflix, Prime, YouTube, etc. on road trips.

 

OBD fusion. Get app on your phone then you can open the app on car play. You can see real time data on temps very easily.

 

Ok update…
I got the Fusion app and plugged in my Carista OBD and linked em with Bluetooth.
It operating and showing engine temps, voltage, etc….but for the life of me I can’t seem to find trans temps.
Anyone know how I get the trans temp gauge to show itself on the Fusion app?

 

You have to program it as a PID.

 

So I programmed the PID’s for the Trans pan temp and torque converter temp, then added them both to the display.
For some reason all I get from both is a reading of 2.0 degrees and sometimes 4.0.

 

what is Option 3. Looks like a new HU?

 

Could be the scale or the display settings. I’m assuming you’re on the correct PID set when you set the app up. You have to choose the right model and correct year etc.

Correct. Big bitchin Kenwood 10" HU... Love it.

Obviously not the cheapest way to monitor trans temps, but it comes with some other nifty features.
