Airbag light on----Clock Spring appears OK

    2004 DC Tundra SR5 4WD automatic.
    Airbag light came on. I known a common culprit is a bad clock spring.
    However, cruise control, horn and radio controls are all working fine.
    Any other common causes?
    (I have a scanner but my son borrowed it. I should have back by Saturday and I'll scan for the cause. For now, I'm gathering comments just to see if anyone nails it.)

    Depends. What code is it throwing? Is it squib circuit or something else?

    Did you make the rookie mistake of unplugging any yellow or orange connectors while the battery was still connected recently?

    Scanned and B0101 code came up. That is indicating an issue with the squib circuit.
    However, I'm not sure the problem is with the clock spring since, as I mentioned in my original post, the radio controls in the steering wheel, along with the cruise control and horn are all working fine. Could the problem be elsewhere? Is it common for the clock spring to be defective while teh CC and horn, control controls are all OK?

    I'll throw out a couple of things at you.

    One, I'd point you at this. Like you, I'd expect to see more symptoms if this was purely clockspring. And I don't recall anyone here ever having a B0101 code pop, though there have been a couple of squib circuit ABS codes pop up. There is a known issue with column ground that some people ran into because the horn wasn't working, and applying (specifically) di-electric grease solves it: https://www.tundras.com/threads/solved-horn-stopped-working.131267/#post-3379759

    Two, I'd point you at the only documentation I could personally find for ABS codes. I don't remember if @BubbaW has additional access to resources, since this is for the 2001 AC and probably doesn't quite match your 2004 DC, which is the same truck he drives: https://charm.li/Toyota/2001/Tundra Access Cab LTD 4WD V8-4.7L (2UZ-FE)/Repair and Diagnosis/A L L Diagnostic Trouble Codes ( DTC )/Testing and Inspection/B Code Charts/B0101/

    It specifically indicates that code points to an issue with the D Squib circuit, either D+ or D-. 2004 Tundra wiring diagram is right here on the forum: https://www.tundras.com/attachments/2004-tundra-ewd567u-pdf.543920/

    You may be able to poke on D+ and D- to translate that diagnostic doc (2nd link above) is what you need.

    If your truck hasn't had the airbag recall done, this may be a good time to do it, just in case it's a short inside the actual airbag itself :rofl:

    (You can go to https://toyota.com/owners to look at service/recall history on your truck, assign your VIN to your account and ... have fun!)

    PS - you may also want to simply clear the ABS codes, and see if/how long it takes for them to return. Most generic, basic readers can't simply clear ABS codes though....

    In a way, there's not much to nail. The SRS is saying the 2 conductors from the Steering Pad(Air Bag) to the Airbag Sensor Assembly(under front end of center console on carpet) are open. They either are or their not. The only way to know is to follow the procedure @shifty` linked to. I have also attached basically the same diagnostic B0101 pages but it's from 04 FSM.

    Once you have your scanner and after clearing the code, hopefully it no longer exists.

    If by chance it does still exist, I suggest you read thru either pdf offered and if you do not understand fully what they are attempting to check, ask away.

    I have dealt with 2 SRS issues that were both related to a Drvr/Pass pre-tensioner....one was an open code and other was for a short. Both were caused by my dumbass but I now have the understanding of their procedures and the why's and also the SRS T-shirt .
    • Took driver side seat belt plumb out and turned Ign On....SRS saw an open(well duh)....B0136
    • Took drvr seat out and did something to cause SRS to report short in pre-tensioner(had to replace whole seat belt/pre-tensioner assembly which wasn't cheap)....B0130
    Definitely follow any and all Pre-cautions during checks
