    Front end has new shocks, upper/lower arms, ball joints, and tie rods, and steering rack bushings in the past year… is it the steering rack or am I being paranoid and this is normal?

    Both sides or just one? Could be inner tie rods, could be the rack. Was the steering wheel locked down?

    Oh I remember I also did the outer tie rods but I’m realizing we didn’t do the inner could the inner ones cause this level of play?

    both wheels, steering was not locked should I do that and check again?

    Lock the steering wheel and only lift one side at a time to test

    Yea, or make a mental note of how much the steering wheel jiggles. The rack can wiggle a bit, the bushings can wear. And the factory steering lock isnt tight enough. I lock it, then bungie the wheel to sorta hold it to one side of the lock. One side at a time will usually solve that problem.


    jack the whole front end up, lay across and use your feet to stabilize one side while you jiggle the other side. You can usually see if the rack or bushings are loose.

    Locked the wheel, raised one side at a time and the play persists

    I call it spitroasted by engineers.

    but the beauty is you can hold a wheel with your hands and wiggle the other at your feet to help determine which inner tie rod it is.

    lol a little late to the topic sorry to open it back up but

    sorry to open this topic back up but I’m dealing with the same thing after replacing upper and lower ball joints and both cv axles and outer tie rod ends. did you find out what was causing it?

    Looks like a wheel bearing to me. But 3/9 o'clock is also indicative of tie rod, however, in this case, you can see the entire knuckle/hub is flopping around - bad TRE aren't going to cause that.

    I replaced the whole steering rack today. The inner tie rods were toast but the rack was also leaking so I went ahead and did the whole. All better now!

    Oh hell yeah I’m on a budget so I ordered a Detroit axle and with 2 day shipping I had to as bad as I wanted to go OEM I couldn’t.
    what brand did you get? OEM?

    I'm on a budget too... I went with Detroit Axle too I think it was $203 before tax. I haven't looked into shipping the core back for the warranty but the rack is self feels good for now.

    I've had the DA rack for 3 years now with is about 3/4 of a year in regular people miles, with 6 off road adventures. It's been fine.
