2022 Tundra vs 2022 F-150 opinion?

    Since this thread will not die I supposed I should update that the Ol' Ferd has also not died yet despite my mistreatment.

    I did test drive a GX550 a couple weeks ago and then went to look at it with my wife again this weekend. Might put a deposit down soon, deciding between the Lexus and a Volvo XC90 (very different cars I know). But we need a third row. I didn't hate the GX drivetrain which I understand is the same as the Tundra save maybe the tuning?

    I enjoyed the F150’s that I owned in the past.

    Two problems I was unable to reconcile:

    1.. resale value. Being the best selling truck brand has its disadvantages, just the number of trucks available on the used market has the effect of reducing resale value.

    2.. mostly all aluminum body. Living in an area with hail being a fairly often weather event repairing damage is more costly requiring specialized equipment, technicians and facilities. In smaller communities that is a huge problem. I understand that most all trucks have aluminum panels however, Ford uses mostly all aluminum.

    meh, he also wanted a ford, so we have a eye on mr. Godzilla, I think he had too much radiation for a while and it made him buy a ford.:rofl::p

    Multiple facets to that one.

    • Every single used car/truck I've ever purchased has been problematic and_or left me stranded. My resulting anxiety won't allow me to purchase used.
    • Worst was a GM product. That experience and the way they took the bailout money and ran takes them off my list of potential vehicles.
    • Ram dumped the V8 and I'm not on board with first model year beta testing a new engine platform when I only own one rig.
    • Nissan test drive was god awful.
    That put me in the ford. I LOVED the 5.0 but everything around it felt poorly assembled/made. Lots of cheap hard plastic in the interior, poorly aligned/assembled grille and headlight assembly, glitch window, and the transmission was acting odd enough I was literally losing sleep.

    Then looking at how ford has handled, or rather not handled, problems along with my own weak experience getting issues resolved... I wanted out.

    The longer I waited the more value the ford lost, so waiting for Ram to revive the hemi wasn't an option. I started hunting for a used 2.5 gen Tundra.

    Prices are obscene on them, and I still get a knot in my stomach thinking about buying a used truck.

    I reached out to some folks with better info, contacts, and way more experience than me and they eased my worries about the Tundra recall. After that I drove my friend's new SR5 for over 2 hours and it felt oddly familiar. It felt like my old 2019 in all the right ways.

    Final straw was having a great salesmen who bent over backwards to get me a truck with the right options at the right price.

    If you're shopping XC90's, have you looked at the Mazda CX90? I know a Mazda but we are seriously thinking of replacing the wife's Telluride with one. Inline turbo 6, mild hybrid, rear wheel drive and hey they look a little different than everything else out there. I love inline 6s and who doesn't like rear wheel drive.

    I love Volvos - hoping I can get my wife to look at one next time around just for comparison's sake, but in our case probably an XC40 or XC60. No kids, so no need for more space than that.

    My wife is on her second CX-5 and they've both been really solid vehicles.

    (I understand the irony when I drive a Ford but) I’m a little concerned about the Volvo reliability. Apparently it’s a little better than it was but the plug in hybrid combines a lot of systems, complexity.

    I've talked a lot of crap on this thread but the truth is I only know one person with a 3rd Gen Tundra and he liked it so much he just traded his '22 in for a '25. He was so excited to upgrade he went to whatever dealer was closest to him which happened to be 600 miles from home at the time.

    I've had two Silverados, one Titan, two Tacomas, one F150 Platinum, two Ridgelines, and now 2025 Tundra Limited Crew Cab 5.5 Here's my summary:

    1999 Silverado 1500 Reg cab long bed, a decent truck but the 5.3L pinged even on premium. Terrible cab squeak that was resolved by adjusting the cab bolts, pretty good mpg overall 17-18.
    2002 Silverado 2500 6.2L Duramax ZF 6-spd manual. Truck had great potential but 2 problems, known injector cracks, (under the valve covers), rattling dual mass flywheel, outstanding range and mpg 20+.
    2004 Titan King Cab, another truck with great potential but repeated problems with warping rotors, and known issues with the pumpkin (differential.) Responsive V8, fun to drive, sporty steering feel, gas pig 14.0 mpg.
    2005 Tacoma TRD access cab 4.0L V6, manual trans, popped out of top gear going up highway incline when new, trans replaced under warranty by Toyota, still have it, 210,000 miles trouble-free overall.
    2008 Tacoma TRD access cab 4.0L V6, manual trans, like the first one, completely trouble-free, traded it for..
    2012 Ford F150 Platinum, 3.5L Ecoboost, solid riding, quiet and comfortable, tremendous power, but another gas pig 14-15 mpg average (on a good day), twice 4WD problem with something called IWE (integrated wheel end), replaced under warranty by Ford, sliding moonroof broke, would not close, cost thousands to repair by ford dealer, more than it cost new, dealer had to remove head-liner, very labor intensive, maddening experience. Read about others that had same problem, how long has Ford been making moonroofs and how long to get it right? Never again.
    2017 Ridgeline, 3.5L 6spd Auto, problem free, traded for..
    2020 Ridgeline, 3.5L 9spd ZF Auto with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, great ride from 4 wheel independent suspension, AWD, corners flat and sporty, 100% problem free, annoyances: no trailer brake control, headlights too bright, overall extremely pleased with it. Traded for..
    2025 Tundra Limited Crew Cab 5.5, loving it so far, very quiet, insulated feel, bouncy over washboard, ride quality over washboard not nearly as good as Ridgeline but quieter and more insulated from road noise, powerful and meeting or (beating) its EPA mpg, very pleased with fuel mileage and range, auto leveling pneumatic rear suspension and no more headlamps shining into eyes of oncoming vehicles, comfortable interior and beautiful layout. Solid and rattle-free.

    Bros love to talk trash on Ridgelines but they are a solid vehicle if it works for your needs, everyone I've talked to that has one loves them.

    2025 Tundra 4x4 Limited Crew Cab 5.5
    The F150 moonroof experience really soured me on Ford but I have to admit, it was a great truck for 2012 with innovations and the 3.5L Ecoboost was a beast. I loved the ride and comfort and power, it was really beautiful too. The nav screen was small by today's standard but it had realtime doppler radar map that was subscription free and extremely appreciated. I think it had locking differential too, can't remember for sure, never needed to use it, the bakflip tonneau and especially, the tailgate integrated pull-out step and raise-up handle was the greatest thing since sliced bread for stepping into the bed, keeping my stuff dry and out of sight.

    I've got to give props to the Titan too, for its bed rail system was great for securing motorcycles. The Ridgelines were the best for a tailgate party, with its deep trunk and outdoor truck bed speaker. The tailgate swing-out feature was also convenient but I wasn't comfortable always with putting motorcycles in back as Honda often pictures on the tailgate because it only had the single cable on one end to support it.

    I was one that loved my Ridgeline. It's a Honda, so there's that. The overall feel of the truck was great. Those that loved to shit talk about the tailgate, probably eventually got one since it was copied by Ford and Dodge. I currently own a 25 MDX because, once again Honda and it has a V6 vs a 4cyl in the RX350. Wife owned a 23 RDX with a 4cyl turbo and you could hear it stressing. Didn't inspire the so called luxury you expected from Acura. Her 20 Lexus NX300, also had a 4cyl turbo but that engine didn't seem stressed. As for your GX550 search, just saw a video of them having windshield problems and cracking because of the upright design. Windshields are on national backorder.

    It’s probably going to be a TX 500h at this point. And yes, I share your four cylinder concerns. Though I will say, on the test drive it seems to pair nice with the hybrid system

    I had xpel windshield screen put on the wife’s. Kinda like a giant iPhone glass protector for the windshield. Her gx is what pushed me to sell my Cummins and buy my tundra, love the engine trans combo.

    Yep. We like it. Just need to decide if we can make three car seats work. I’ll admit I thought it would be a little more peppy but I guess it’s heavy.

    Guess it’s all relative, I honestly think the gx / tundra almost have too much power for daily driving. I mean a truck that goes 0-60 under 6 seconds is insane. Compared to her 4 runner the gx literally falls like a rocket ship haha.

    if you actually need a 3rd row for daily use I would pass on the gx. Its tiny to say the least. We have 3 kids under 3 and not a single car seat in the the gx so she went with the overtrail with no 3rd row and the massive trunk. We bought an oddesy to hual everyone at same time. Makes life 1000 times easier imo.

    I just reread that. Not a chance your getting 3 car seats, even the evnflow which I highly recommend since they turn, would be next to impossible on the bench. If it’s 3rd row maybe get one in the back, but access to that 3rd row isn’t user friendly.

    Only real issue that I have seen is the J35Y6 V6 having connecting rod/crank issues.Honda being Honda covers it with no issues that I have heard of. The earlier version did have some oil consumption which has always been a debate over what the manuf considers normal and what the owner considers normal. I owned a Acura TSX that was known to have oil consumption issues. Most engine where replaced under warranty. Overall it's a good vehicle to own.
