    Not sure if this was mentioned in the middle pages of the thread I didn't read, but this is similar with EVs. Can't use the bottom 10% of the battery, and suggested max charge is 80% or so, so your working range is really 30% less than the advertisement says.

    I have a theory they did this to give the fuel pump extra cooling.
    I've messed around trying to figure out how far I can go with the full tank. And after 7 years I still can't figure out how much is accessible. I think if i fill it up full, and only drive highway driving, it somehow uses more of the 38 gallons. Maybe because it's steady fuel consumption. But if you try to use the full capacity with street driving, I get different results.

    Running the tank to empty every time is what a lot of people do, and that's "Operator Error". I think this way toyota tired to help the fuel pump by giving extra fuel to surround it

    I dunno. I think 3-4 gallons can never be accessed for range, and that is for fuel pump cooling.

    Toyota should tell us the real design to it.
