Does anyone have experience with drastically overtightened LBJ bolts? This is what happened after cranking on it with my breaker bar. Note: just because a dealer did the LBJ's on recall doesn't mean they used a torque wrench.



Also, fuck sway bar links. Always a PITA.

I'd be really surprised if they could be overtightened to that point without breaking. Maybe they are rusted or someone used Loctite?

I know from experience they will snap....

No it's not haha my 1/2" breaker bar is ironically shorter than my 3/8". Need to get a new one.

That would be less than ideal.

Unfortunately for two of them the threads aren't exposed so I can't get penetrant on there.

 

A lot of people are convinced you need to use red loctite on LBJ hardware and they often do so. Red requires heat to remove. Before going further I would throw heat on the fastener.

I personally use blue, and torque to spec, then mark my bolt heads and joint so I have a reference line to see if they are backing out. I check every bolt at every oil change.

 

I was gonna say, im one of the ones that was under the impression you needed red loctite for LBJs. I used some on my last replacement. Hopefully in another 70k miles or so I wont have too much trouble getting mine off when the time comes! Haha wish me luck!

 

A lot of times you can impact off red loctite, it depends on how liberally someone applied. But if you’re stuck with manual tools or impact won’t spin it off in 10-15 seconds, it’s probably slathered in red. Break out the heat. Torch on the head of the bolt for 20-30 sec then torque on it.

 

Toyota's red/pink thread locker that comes precoated on the later LBJ bolts is much closer to blue loctite than red loctite. If I reuse an LBJ bolt, I clean off the old thread locker and add blue when I reinstall.

 

HEAT is your friend, probably had some red locktite?

Well, we had a torrential downpour this morning along with hail the size of gumballs. Not an ounce of water got into the headliner so it’s pointing to the 3rd brake light gasket as the culprit. Probably gonna order that this weekend along with O2 sensors. Stayed tuned for the DIY ramp build.

Then it escalated to fixing this annoying flaking of white paint around the grill


Taking that grill out is a risk vs reward proposition, and even though mine had been re-installed during the accident repairs it was still cringe worthy.
Hood appears to be aftermarket that was black/primed before it being (NOT 056) white painted.




Rustolium X2 white satin rattle can, close enough. Brushed it on the window seam.

Some other rust spots got some love too. I see the end though, where I can't stop it's death eventually.

I’ve read anything over 150 lb ft should use 1/2 or 3/4” drive tools. Not a hard rule but some tool makers don’t make quality hardened tools.
