There are plenty of problems a dress code can't address, but in an office environment some semblance of politesse has to be enforced. Sweat pants, the ever-beloved-in-the-right-circumstances-but-often-misused yoga pants, ratty ass clothes of any kind, etc. are easy to rule out. I was very, very sorry for getting a girl fired for wearing way, way too much horrible perfume around me. Certain clothing styles that would be the ethnic equivalent of a white hood and cape should be banned, but often aren't. There's no way to cover everything.

It's unfortunate, but behaviors have to be controlled as well because nobody seems to understand basic manners anymore. Things that are as or more impolite as nuking leftover salmon in the break-room microwave or washing your feet in the bathroom sink were normal daily occurrences when I was in the office.

I behave well when I'm around coworkers and colleagues; but I'm glad I work from home.

Nah, I just laugh out loud and make the hipsters feel uncomfortable.

The real question is… if a female walked up to me as I exited the bathroom and said “Sorry, the ladies room is out. Would you mind grabbing me some from the mens room”…should I help her because I am a gentleman or should I just open the door and invite her in to the mens room?

Speaking as someone whose forbears where Eastern European, I am pale white. I don't tan, I burn. Worst kind of sunburn for me, being a bald person is a burnt scalp. Sucks beyond all measure.

I keep a hat in the car for when I am out hiking or being outdoors in general. I rarely use sunscreen, as it always runs into my eyes after I start sweating and it feels like someone pepper sprayed me at that point.

All that being said, I basically live in shorts outside of the workplace. They range from loose fitting basketball shorts around the house to cargo shorts outside of the house. I understand where I live and the climate plays a huge role in being able to dress like that. I can't imagine wearing shorts in perpetual winter where some of you guys live.

There are world renowned restaurants where I live and I refuse to go to any of them because the idea of having to put on slacks to go somewhere to eat at this point in my life is not something I am willing to entertain.

Except without them we'd have employees showing up to work at their location grocery store wearing a loose tank top w/their armpit hair hanging out on falling out onto my fresh fruit selections and deli meats :puke:

Work dress code is fairly loose here, but still has definite limits thankfully. (Combined office/manufacturing setting.)
My personal dress code for the last 25 years at least:
Safety-toed athletic/hiker style low rise shoes. (Covered, $125 annual)
    Blue jeans, clean, no holes/rips/tears.
SS T-shirt, tucked, that can say whatever I want because it's always covered by a
SS button down casual shirt, untucked. (Was polos for a while.)
    Summer/Winter no difference.

I see it opposite. Those that don't play by the rules of wearing what's proper just find themselves out of work. Show up to a construction site wearing the wrong shit and no work for you today. Show up to a corporate office in a halter top and lulu lemon pants. Go right on home and don't clock in. Same for the asshat who is wearing a tank top stocking the fresh fruits and veggies isle. If we had harsh penalites the mandatory lines of what's appropriate would enforce themselves. Here's the kicker in my world. No unemployment compensation for those that can't figure it out for themselves. They can starve and wallow in their own stupidity.

You just triggered a hydrocodone induced rant........:eek2:
Not you so much that triggered me as the topic.
Members may scroll on if you're not interested.

Not just a trucker, but labeled by my employer as a professional driver when I was hired in 1986.
The dress code was STRICTLY enforced for the majority of my tenure.
I signed documentation acknowledging the dress code and its enforcement policies when I was hired.

Used to be no facial hair except for a mustache that had to be no lower than the sides of the mouth.
No sideburns below the bottom of the earlobe.
I shaved every workday for 30 years until I figured out I could get by shaving every other workday.
I myself have no desire to grow facial hair to any length, I can't stand to go a week without shaving.

Then, 10 or 15 years ago, someone figured out they could get an exception for shaving for medical reasons.
All of a sudden, many had this dermatological illness; all they needed was a signed doctor's note.
Ok, but the beard had to be no more than a 1/8 or 1/4 inch in length, which lasted a couple of years.
Then came the current CEO, now we have drivers that look fresh off of Duck Dynasty.
As well 8 out of 10 drivers I work with have a goatee to hide their double and triple chins.
Most of them look like they've been eating powdered doughnuts with the white/grey facial hair.

Haircuts had to be above the collar for men, long hair on women had to be up or in a ponytail.
The men with long hair would tuck it up under their hats, fine with me.
Now men have ponytails, braids, dreadlocks, and man buns.

No visible tattoos; for this reason, all mine can be covered with a t-shirt.
Now we have drivers with face, neck, full sleeves, and prison tattoos.

The uniform code was very strict.
Only issued clothing could be worn; shirts, pants, shorts (we couldn't wear shorts until the mid 1990s), caps, jackets, coats, belts, winter hats.
If one wears shorts they have to buy their own brown UPS logo socks, but the those thin socks suck and I wear brown Thorlos.
T-shirts have to be white or brown.
Shoes have to be brown or black with LEATHER uppers with a slip-resistant sole, NO SNEAKERS.
No visible actual clothing can be seen unless it is issued or approved by the company.
In 2019, they started offering polo-type shirts, which I don't care for, and a few tweaks to the clothing and materials.

Now we have drivers wearing shorts with sweatpants underneath, long-sleeved colored thermal wear with a short-sleeved shirt..
Sneakers, street clothes with just an open uniform shirt, knee-high socks, etc.
The management is too afraid to reprimand anyone for fear of offending the sensitivities of whatever the current trend of being offended might be.
All this started with the current CEO.

Y'all may not agree with my views on this, and that's fine.
It may seem trivial, that I'm closed-minded and old, maybe I am.

I'm usually a live-and-let-live kinda guy, but taking pride in one's actions or employment seems to be an old-fashioned thing.
I used to be proud of the company I dedicated 40 years of my life to as an employee.
But taking pride in something like that seems to be a thing of the past.
I've only got 1 to 3 years to go anyway before I can retire.
I've enjoyed not going to work the last 6 months..

Rant over, time for dog walks...

As an Accounting and Finance professional, I do take my workplace attire seriously. Button down long sleeve dress shirt, slacks and dress shoes unless there is a casual Friday rule where I work. I never held any of my direct reports or other staff to that standard but it was one I kept for myself.

Even places with a more relaxed dress policy I tend to stick to collared shirt, slacks and dress shoes. I'm being paid by someone and the image I put out there reflects that. Outside of the workplace it is 99% shorts and at most cargo pants.

I understand that what you wear doesn't reflect the quality of work you can produce but it is a slippery slope and I can't stand people being slobs in the workplace. I'm all for people being comfortable in their clothing but at the same time you aren't at a bbq or the beach either. Dress accordingly and use common sense.

Huge disclaimer to all of that, if you are public facing, then dress code, whatever it may be should be strictly enforced. Back office, no worries you do you.

All the news you didn't need to hear...

I saw my third neurologist Tuesday. First one diagnosed a CSF leak, 2nd one told me I shouldn't try to solve the problem, only treat symptoms (buhbye, fu(ktard), and this one says it's likely not a leak. He's a neurosurgeon, not a straight up neurologist, so I had reservations about what he'd say - hammers and nails and me not wanting to get cut on. Glad not to have one if he's right, but that puts all the symptoms at a loss for a diagnosis. He recommended caffeine pills and an abdominal binder, which are non-invasive enough, and might help prove one thing or another.

It couldn't be a wart or ass cancer. Had to be something nobody can put their finger on.
