    This.

I’m in a similar situation as you with RTO. We picked up a 2015 Civic Si with a few cosmetic issues (little bit of hail damage, cloudy paint on roof) but only 66k miles. All stock and very well maintained. It’s a manual and fun as heck to drive. It gets in the 30s for mpg. The tundra sits more now, but it’s still around. Zero regrets.

My 14 535d has been an excellent commuter...

Mid 30's MPG, avg 500mi per tank and fun as hell to drive with a Race Chip tuner and XLR.

A lot of people (including myself) have gone down the path of selling a truck due to commuting and wind up buying another truck down the road since one is needed more than most think.

Now my Lexus wasn't cheap to maintain by any means. I could have purchased a lot cheaper car to buy and maintain. Every 40-50k miles the front brakes were needing replaced, premium fuel, offset tires that couldn't be rotated (50-60k was still normal), insurance was higher with a sports sedan, etc. I enjoyed that car every day though. It kept 110k miles off my truck. That was the huge savings. Diesel/tires/maintenance had my truck been at 260k miles vs 123k (I also used my daughter Corolla S a lot).

Did I save 10k dollars in maintenance costs on my truck over that period of time? Well let's see:

    -3-4 sets of tires-1200x4=4,800
-Probably a set of injectors-5000.00. 3200 if I do them myself.
    -water pump-7-800.00
-probably another front end job that I just did 2000.00 if doing it myself.
-28 oil changes 2500.00 doing them myself with AMSoil reg. If I use signature series the price goes up to 133x28 which I do use.
-maybe a transmission. Hard to say depending on use. Stock factory one can be had for 3000.00. A mild build that can handle 1200 pound feet of torque is 4600-5400.
-here is the big one. I don't need to purchase another truck. Mine new in 2016 was 58k. A new 3500 today is 76k at least with the same trim package. I can go a lot longer now without buying a new truck that has raised significantly in price.

Did I make out? I would say so. Others would say I didn't.

I think corolla takes the crown for blasting around town running errands. I was a passenger in one not very long ago and they are very capable machines! ULTRA roomy too! I had no issues sitting in the back tied up, plenty leg room!

My cousin bought a Camry with 80K miles on it for $10,000. He sold it 6 years later with 120K on it for $7500. Trouble free.

^ Probably the best bet. As soon as someone sells a truck, they will end up needing one the following week for one reason or another. Good to keep a truck on-hand for sure.

The car I had before my Tundra was a 2015 Honda CR-V EX-L. It got good gas mileage. Being AWD, it handled decent on winter roads. And the extra cargo space was nice versus a Corolla or a Civic. There is a lot I miss about that car. I'd still be driving it today if I didn't come across the insane deal on my 2006 Tundra.

The Crown is a gem to drive. I live in the hills and dip in the cities. B mode is nice and fun to operate.

Gang, we are talking about corolla. Whoch crown do you mean? Here, it is being spoken of crown, as in trophy. First place.

I’ve thought about getting a commuter, but I’m just not sure it’s worth it to me. Over the long run, if you buy a cheap enough car, you can save money. But I don’t really care about miles on my truck. Speaking of, I am self-employed with a home office. All of my work mileage, maintenance, and cleaning gets written off with a pretty massive tax credit at the end of the year (I track all mileage, fillups, oil changes, tires, everything down to car wash soap and take actual deductions).

I mean, it would be fun to have another car like a WRX or a performance Tesla, but I would rather just drive this for 10-15 years than buy a cheaper commuter.

A crown from the late 80’s could be had with a 1uz. All these fwd suggestions are depressing.

Same as the OP, back to the office this year, with a 40ish mi commute each way. Been debating what to do. Have been driving my 12 4runner, and have been thinking about selling it and my 18 f-350 and buying a tundra. At least that was plan before the RTO came about.
Racking up 80 mi days on it with not great gas mileage seem less than ideal also. So have been thinking about selling just the 4runner and looking for a car. Stupid back to the office.

Depends on the daily commute, if you are at 100 miles a day just drive what you have. It will always be cheaper than everything that goes with the second vehicle. You live once.
