I overfilled the transmission by 1/2 qt. Does it need to be removed or is there enough room in the pan?

Enough room for what? It should be 4 quarts in the pan.

You can drain out what’s in the pan and subtract 1/2 quart from it, then pour it back in via the dipstick tube if you have the correct funnel which I assume you do.

What is the effect on the transmission if I didn't drain that 1/2 qt

Probably not much for 1/2 quart. I can tell you for a quart too low it will lead to rough shifting. I can’t tell you the effect of a slight overfill though.

Are you basing the 1/2 qt amount off of what you pored in or checking via the dipstick. If not via dipstick, suggest follow procedure for checking and see where it falls on dipstick.
Post pic of level on dipstick if you care to.

    1/2 too much is fine

on my 1st Gen that’s the only way i got rid of the “thump” when taking my foot off the brake to accelerate
