Well, everything seemed to have gone well. Got everything put back together, went to grab a pizza a few blocks away and then...groaning after a couple minutes. Got to the grocery store looked underneath and the fuckin CV came outta the differential. I fucking popped it in! it wouldn't pull back out easily so I put everything back together. Now i'm here...hopefully after limping it home I didn't fuck anything up too bad and I just have to re-seat it.

ECGS bushing is sticking out about 1/16 of an inch. I felt no significant thud when driving it in different to any of the other taps. As far as there being " a lip" in the race where the bushing sits all I could feel by hand was a hole on top and bottom which i didn't drive past depth wise..are they for oil to lubricate the bearing?

I'll tear things apart in the morning and see what I see. Any insight on what I may have not done correctly would be fantastic. FML

 

1/16 might be on the strong side, there’s definitely some kind of lip, maybe 1.5 fingernail thickness. I would think your diff side spring c clip might be the issue.

 

Ok. Is that lip something one could feel with the bushing in place if it weren't up to it yet? For some reason I doubt it..may try a right angle pick very lightly to see if I can feel what you're referring to. It may end up being flush if I give it a couple taps. When I pulled the old CV I had to give it a few good yanks while rotating it, using it as a slide hammer on itself. it def had the resistance I expected.

 

Take a good look at that ring when you pull it, make sure it's all there.
I went on a magnet fishing expedition for mine .
If I remember correctly my bushing was pretty damn close to flush

I wanna say that after we couldn't get mine to seat we pulled that little c-clip off the beat it with a sledge hammer to get it in. This was after about 12 hours of drinking so I could be wrong. @Sirfive @455h0le_dachshund @MrDirtjumper

 

Clip is still on. ECGS bushing is not smooth towards diff any more,... thinking cleaning up and magnet in there to get what I can then going back together?

 

Yup, I don't think I got it in near far enough. Good news is axle seems like it's fine. So my options now are pull this and put the old needle bearing back in or drive this fucker where it needs to be and run it. The whole idea with this bushing is extra support for the most part right? There's a pretty good groove in the bushing but for the most part I think it'll do its job. Thoughts?

 

What's all that debris? Is that metal shavings? I hate to say it, but it looks like your bushing is mangled. I would probably order a new bushing, install it properly and know you won't have issues again. If the rubber seal is damaged, order a new one of those too.

 

It's from the bushing having the axle fall out and being at an angle it wore a groove into the new bushing.
Seal is fine.
I suppose I can drive this in put it back together after it I'm confident it's cleaned up well enough and I can always order another bushing and the tool so I don't have to send @FrenchToasty goodies a second time lol, then pull the mangled bushing out and install the fresh one again down the road.

 

I'm pretty sure that bushing needs to be driven in till it stops. I'll agree with Erik, that one looks trashed.

 

I guess my question now is even though it's got a groove worn into it there's no harm in driving it farther and leaving it in there, reinstalling things and then putting a fresh one in later do you think? It should still support the CV axle like it's intended is my thinking...

 

I'm not the most qualified to answer that but my guess is that the mangled bushing should be fine for a little while. I'd go ahead and order a new one now and swap it when it arrives. It will go a lot faster the second time.

Eh, live and learn. It's back together. We'll see if anything falls apart when I go drive it just to park it to ride my bike and get away from things while I hunt down some local brews for the tool man.
At least I'll have an extra set of wheels in the bed if it falls apart and I leave on the side of the road.

In shear disappointment of how she has treated me in the last 12 hrs I'm leaving this grease on her cheek so she has a reminder to think about things...

 

For me it took care of a vibration from about 30-45mph, because the needle bearing was worn TF out and sloppy.

 

This is the way. If the handle of your jack is aluminum use a rubber mallet or dead blow or you WILL be filing down the reduced end of your jack handle when you're done. Aside from the usual taking things apart, torquing things, fighting your coil-overs spring to get it up and aligning the lbj to.drop into to the lca, this really isn't awful. Just messy. Have rags on hand, a lot.
When driving the new bushing in once you get it started straight, tap,tap...tap even more. It will go just keep checking that it's straight in the beginning.
As far as depth this is the best way to describe it. The race where the bushing sits is slightly larger than where the splined end of the CV shaft, therefore it has to narrow down towards the diff. It's very subtle. This is what stops the bushing as you tap it. If you lightly take a right angle pick slide it in/along the race, pointed end down on race after removing the bearing you should feel it raise up right before the splined area. Attached below is my attempt at a visual of this.

 

Heres a close up pic of mine installed. Maybe the amount of lip shown is helpful. I tapped mine in until the sound changed to a dull thud and it stopped moving.
