Searching this topic is a pain across google and this forum. Just so many convos that start up and drop off out of nowhere in the middle of random threads. That sticky tundra lunchtable thread is an ADHD nightmare. As soon as a post or two gets interesting with technical info the conversation changes to "oh hey look at this cat" and it never recovers. Please, don't refer anyone to that thread for any tech information unless its solvable in one single post.

So we all know LT headers especially catless = rabbit hole of permanent CEL's.

    • What are all you catless people doing about the exhaust fumes?
    • If you are living with the CEL's, what are you doing about running rich and poor MPG?
    • To those who have found tuners, which tuner are you using and what's the process?
    • To those who have deleted the codes, how did you do it?
    • Overall what all P0 codes are you seeing?

I saw some posts from Keith at dirtydeeds from 2012 where he says unhooking the rear 02's stopped his truck from running rich and brought his MPG back. Has anyone else done this to confirm?

This thread is meant to be more of a brainstorming/collection of thoughts and ideas. Anyone feel free to post whatever they want with questions, comments, concerns etc.

What year is your truck. Upstream O2's / AFR sensors are your concern. Long tubes move primary AFR sensors farther down stream and will alter voltage reading correlated to fuel trim/cold start/open-closed loop operation. If non-vvti you need someone that specializes in the early ecu. I have a guy in Maryland, but he insists on dyno and street tuning/ mapping. If off road/race only , downstream O2's are easier to fool.

Non vvti requires hardware mod to alter voltage readings and ecu calibration. Lots of buy-in to do it right and not just run around in open loop and super rich.

Mine is an 05 VVTI Sequoia. My cats where stolen in 2021ish and the crackheads sawed off the wires too. I went with long tube headers and mid pipe from dirty deeds. I also purchased the proper 02 wire extenders that simply harness/click into the pigtails. No ghetto rigging/splicing. All 02/AFR sensors are genuine denso brand. Nothing from Amazon. All real parts. I also have 12 hole injectors from dirty deeds. Brand new genuine denso or ngk spark plugs (can't remember). I do have the secondary air bypass delete kit as well. MAF and throttle body cleaned multiple teams. I've got the downtstream 02 defoulers/extenders too. All the usual stuff that has been mentioned has been checked and done. I've established that this is simply the way of life and the nature of the beast with this modification.

I had all sorts of codes. Low circuit and what not. Thought my wiring might have been messed up from being melted/shorted and maybe shot my ECM. That wasn't the case. Currently I have P0420, P0430, P0172, P0175. I also had a few EVAP codes that may or may not be related. All my ABS VSC and BRAKE lights are on and have been on. Ive put on 70 miles since deleted and they have not returned but I know they will eventually. I/M readiness shows 3 ready and 4 not.

I do have some insane exhaust fumes. Eye searing, nose burning, and suffocating if you stand around the exhaust pipe. Mind you, this is an SUV and the tailpipe exits right under the hatch. If my weather stripping isn't fully sealed all the fumes come right into the cabin.

If a tune can solve my issues in terms of the CEL light and running rich thats wonderful. But at this point in time I'm willing to deal with the CEL as long as I can not run rich. I recently blended E85 with gasoline and that has helped tremendously with the smell.

In the top-right corner of your 1st reply, you may want to use the "Thread Tools" button to update your post title to include the phrase "1st gen" so you don't get people popping in here chiming in about 2nd/3rd/etc. gen Tundras with info that has nothing to do with your interest.

Have you reached out to Keith and asked him?

Trash talking the most comprehensive community developed informational thread, starting your own “definitive” thread in the wrong section for a vehicle that isn’t even in your profile description is hardly helpful to others. Just more clutter. Reach out to Keith, the guy you got your headers from, and also claimed to have a solution, then share that info here.
