My reception is bad on a new to me purchase away from town. I was advised to get a new antenna. Antenna I have now is a short stubby one. Do I just need to replace the antenna or should I also replace the base? I think I am capable of replacing the antenna but not sure if I am able to replace the base. Will changing the base to help with reception? Any help really appreciated!

I tried at least 3 different "short subby" antennas on mine. Reception was less than great on all. Bit the bullet and went back to the original mast and reception is excellent.
    Just replace the antenna.

Tried the stubbys, poor reception. Back to the original unless someone can show me a stubby that performs as well and, is not cost prohibitive.

So, I tried a stubby flexible. I was better off with no antenna. Reception was not there.
Then I tried an OEM style but only like 18" tall with some wire wrapped around it. Pretty much same thing as far as reception.
Since these 2 antennas were trash, I decided to build my own. Pictures are attached.
I took the paint off of the OEM one, and unrolled the wired from it. I got some 20 gauge brass wire and rolled it tightly around it to about 6" up from the bottom. The reception was just like OEM!!!!
So I decided to make it look good for a finished product.
Unrolled that wire, cut that antenna down to about 8", put it in a drill and wrapped the wire real good.
Used a piece of hose to slide down tightly on it and capped it with a rubber cap.

I took the flexible one and sliced it open. A spring was at the bottom to make it flexible. Then came a piece of plastic with some hair thin wire wrapped around it. I pulled the piece of plastic and wire out of it.
Took a piece of the OEM antenna that I cut off, measured it to length to fit in the original piece of rubber that I sliced open.
Took a piece of the wire, put it down in the spring part and inserted(as in tapped it in with hammer) the piece of OEM antenna.
Put it in a drill and wrapped the wire nice and tight.
Put that back in the original rubber covering and glued it back together. Used a vice to close the gap and to let the glue dry.
