Has any successfully replaced the JBL subwoofer with and aftermarket one using the factory box?

If so, what sub did you use?

Does any one know what kind of mounting depth I am working with in the factory box?

I asked the same question. Today, did a little measuring after taking off the factory sub front cover. There seems to be enough space to possibly make a custom enclosure while utilizing the factory location of the 10” JBL thingy. I say thingy because it looks like an oversized midrange! I plan on stopping by a few audio shops yo see what they can come up with.

The JBL sub isn’t really in a box. It’s more like a plastic holder. I guess it’s an open air or semi sealed/ported box that seals to the rear bulkhead and vents outside the truck (right protruding thing on sub holder). Here is a pic of it uninstalled:

Correct. Thats why I’m interested in seeing if one of the shops here in Henderson/Vegas can modify it so a shallow sub can mount in the area. Possibly glassing the back portion and adding support to the inside walls. Then glassing the inside of the front cover that can be easily removed. Anything that will keep it more factory looking. There’s even that middle space that can be utilized as well to build out the enclosed if more volume is needed. I plan on stopping by a couple shops this afternoon.

Curious what that space looks like when it’s in your truck? If that thing truly vents to the outside that’s pretty sweet, didn’t realize the 3rd gen’s had that, essentially an infinite baffle sub, pretty sweet!

Here’s a pic of the OEM installed without the JBL panel/grill. I was sound deadening the rear bulkhead while I was waiting for the sub box to be delivered.
