Adding cruise to 1st gen base model

Hey yall, im new here. My truck is a 2003 3.4, 2wd, automatic, base model. I thought that after doing a few google searches i could add cc to my truck with just the addition of the stalk but after installing the stalk and still no cruise i started digging a little deeper. It seems that maybe my year model would need to have the actuator and cable, throttle body lever that will accept the cable, module, and possibly a brake switch. I also do not see any existing wiring/female plug behind the air box where i think there should be for the actuator. May be worth noting that i do have the cruise indicator lamp in the cluster. (Left side of temp gauge). My thoughts are that sourcing and installing the parts shouldn’t be much of an issue but the lack of existing wiring is gonna be a little bit of a hurdle. I guess my question is, could i scavenge just the 4pin connector and harness for the actuator from a donor vehicle and if so where does it plug/splice in to at the other end? Thank you!

Not sure on CC, but there are a couple of threads on here that touch the subject/install.

Just noticed ... It looks like you're missing a vacuum line off the hard line back there?

I looked into this at one point in time, however, IIRC, it was not possible for me to add cruise to my 00 base 5ZV without major fabrication of wiring just as you described. I didn't look into it further after that. I JY 5VZ with cruise may give you your best shot. It's really easy to do so on the electronic throttle body trucks. It sucks to do it on the cable driven TB trucks like you and I have.

 

Kinda what i figured. Bummer. And yeah, i was thinking that scavenging everything off a donor vehicle might make it doable. I just gotta find out what the actuator harness ties into and if im opening a can of “electronic worms”. Thank you

I added an aftermarket cruise to 2 different cable driven TB vehicles. Would t be utilizing the factory stalk, but worked great with the supplied controller buttons. And the kit was cheap.

edit: quick search shows these kits are $400 or so these days.

 

I've installed a Rostra brand cruise control in two different vehicles (scion xB, ford econoline van). The kits are pretty nice. The Rostra kit that i installed in my scion xB is actually the optional dealer add on CC kit. The control stalks that Rostra uses are pretty much an exact clone of most factory toyota stalks. It looks just like the one on my tundra. One thing to be aware of, is if you have a v6 (or even a v8) and larger than stock tires with the original ring and pinion gear ratio, the cruise control probably won't work very efficiently on any sort of mild incline.
