What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

People don’t ever listen to me when I say 6112 is a million times better than the 5100 then they get blown away when they upgrade.

 

Does anyone know where to get a carpet kit for a 2006 double cab?

Swapped in a pair of CVJ axles to be done with them once and for all. Went with the "Best" option since OEM Remans aren't available anymore.


Once they were put back on before I put the wheels on I did a spin check. The passenger was nice and smooth but the drivers required a good bit of force to turn. Both axles torqued to 174ft lbs. I thought maybe a rotor was dragging so I pulled the pads on both sides and no difference. Is that typical for the front diff to have one drag harder than the other? Or is this likely the source of my odd vibration I can't seem to find?

 

Damn dude, I think those may be worse than @Green00SR5's uppers. I felt so bad I couldn't help but give him my nice, pristine low-mile factory arms for the low cost of shipping.

And I'm saying don't waste money on AAL at all. Just buy new leaf packs. I wish I had done that.

 

When I loosen the axle nut to just over hand tight it spins nice and free. Anything more than that or close to torque specs and it really doesn't want to turn. I'm really hoping it's not a bad bearing... Not looking forward to doing that job.

Updating in case anyone runs into this same issue:

It turned out to be the dust shield that goes on the backside of the wheel hub. I thought that I had it set flush but turns out it was raised a bit at the bottom where it's tough to see by the LBJ. I pulled it out and set it back in nice and flush this time. No more binding!

 

So are you all scrubbing and painting them not that they've stayed looking like this 20 years?!

 

Always impressed with what little effort it takes (less that 2-3 minutes) to bring them back. Factors: MI climate, low level of oxidation. Follow this up with a ceramic of your choice and your good for at least 6-8mo.

 

In my case yes I did paint it. But it barely had any rust being in the south. It is a little worse now and needs a fresh coat. That picture is from 2019.

 

I havent painted my trucks naughty bits yet, but i keep threatening to. Its ‘usually’ cleaner than my recent pics. Still havent washed the truck since t2s, but its been rinsed a couple times.

 

Mine has never been scrubbed or painted. Some other frame porn for you….

Not an option in the Midwest to.protect from the cities "buy a new vehicle program" when they spread salt. Just another maintenance item but still better than a new car payment. Need to by a reliable bucket to drive in the winter that I don't love as much as the Tundra.

 

Which is correct? When in took them off they were installed with the dish facing out, but it seems like it should be the other way with a smaller gap between the washer and bushing. FSM doesn't seem to specify

 

Parts diagram shows it but FSM doesn't. Weid.

 

You didn't replace axle seals did you? I'm not sure I ever tried spinning tires as a test after replacing the CVs on my Tacoma, so I'm not sure if it's normal. Haven't done it yet on the Tundra. Only reason for my question is that I just did work on the rear axle of my trailer (old Ford truckbed trailer), and I had the same issue. One side spun freely, the other side wouldn't budge an inch once the axle nuts were torqued. I have to assume it's been this way for years, but the axle seal was actually not completely seated. It stuck out enough that when torqued, the axle was right up against the metal edge of the seal, and couldn't be spun by hand, at least without the tire on giving that extra leverage. The tire would spin when I pulled the trailer with my truck, obviously, but I guess there must have been a ton of drag. With how tight those seals sit in the housing, there's no way I pulled it out when I was pulling the axle shafts, so it must have been that way before.

 

Estimated with two 20 year old vehicles as DDs have saved over $150,000 not rebuying every 7 years at inflated costs even without including costs of loans ... given a new truck is like $50,000 now and somewhere inbetween $50k and that sticker 7-10 years ago.

 

If you could only buy OEM parts for a vehicle indefinitely, you’d be set for life.

 

I don’t get it man, I live in the desert and my truck lives in the garage and my frame doesn’t even look like that.

 

Looks like a replacement frame.

 

At least the frames were treatable. Nowadays with thinner gauged boxed frames from bow to stern, it’s incredibly difficult to prevent rust to some degree inside the frame. All part of planned obsolescence I guess.
