Random question for the group.... If you were to pick up a new to you Tundra 1st Gen, and it was 1300miles to drive her home, would you drive it home? Pay for it to be freighted home? Kind of want to take the road trip, but want your opinions. Thanks!

Depends. Is the timing belt overdue or are the LBJs aftermarket or have more than 150k if OEM. If so you’re playing with fire. If not, check all fluids, air up tires, clean battery terminals and send it.

Random answer….Only way I would drive from MS River to the west coast would be after I had seen the vehicle and asked about maintenance. I’d still be puckered up until arriving home.

Look it over, know the maintenance, bring some tools, plan to fix a few things before you leave, plan to be stranded and fix a few things along the way, plan to leave the truck and fly home, plan for the known, plan for the unknown and have a blast doing it. Mrs Mamba and I recently bought a 2016 Lincoln MKZ V6 100k. I looked it over, changed the oil and 3 days later we dove 3000 miles in it. Maybe we made it by the grace of God, but it wouldn't scare me to do it again. Just know what you're getting into. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance.

Can you take toolboxes thru security? and onto an airplane as your "carry on" ? Appreciate the feedback!

Get a tool kit from Hazard Fright Tools when you arrive and just leave them in the truck. They're cheap and you can get a pretty good variety in a handy carry case.

If the seller has provided good information, clear pictures etc, you'll probably be fine. And if you've asked the right questions... "why are you selling it?", "would you hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow if you had to?" etc.

    Has it ever overheated?
    Does it burn oil?
    Does it shift smoothly?

    Etc...

If there is sincerity in the seller's voice and he doesn't sound like a moron, or a salesman/bullshit artist, you're most likely going to be fine.

If it were an old Cadillac or something, then yeah, there would be some reason for concern.

Just think of it as a Roadkill or Vice Grip Garage adventure...pick up the truck, then head to the nearest AutoZone to pick up a couple hundred $ worth tools, fluids (coolant, oil, ATF), Mountain Dew, and whatever you think would be handy in case of unplanned stops along the way. It's all about the adventure!

If it has good service history on Carfax hell yeah. Pop the timing cover off and take a look at the condition of the belt or have seller do it and take pics. If it's good then bring an extra pair of LBJ and some tools and drive it. I can't stress a good OBDII scanner enough either. Even a bluetooth dongle and paid app on your phone will do wonders.
