The nice thing about my truck is I just set the temp I want and the truck keeps it at that temp.

if I want it lower I just toggle it lower, ask my wife to turn it down, or use the “Hey Toyota” voice command to adjust it.

I admit the truck had a learning curve of less than 5 minutes to figure out the layout so I can see how it would be confusing at first but with the whole automotive industry going away from physical controls big chunky knobs are a thing of the past.

Not too far off how we ended up with a 2024 Land Cruiser… it’s way better at being a family oriented 4X4 utility vehicle than a truck, and I already have a truck that is currently about perfect for using as a truck.

 

So if I’m faced with “no hope of contact with man” for 10 years how does a guy keep a truck in fuel, tires, and all the other stuff you need to have a functional vehicle?

Your scenario is a bit far fetched.

So, since we’re talking about a post apocalyptic scenario I choose a giant monster truck with a big fuck off V8 with zoomie headers and huge blower. It will go great with my all black leather outfit covered in spikes. This is the setup Hollywood says is going to be the transportation answer in this situation.

Now if we’re being more thoughtful I have to point out there are only 3 Toyota dealers in all of Alaska. So if I’m going to be living very far from Juneau, Fairbanks, or Anchorage I would select a 3/4 ton gas V8 Ford or GM 4X4. Why? Not because they’re more reliable than a Tundra, but because every oil and gas, forestry, and mining outfit uses fleets of them. This in turn means every little town with a mechanic will have someone who knows how to fix them, and will also probably have common parts in stock.

 

Previous owner of my truck hit the front end on something hard enough to get an imprint of the crash bar on one of the front bumper pieces. Front bumper is hanging on by one bracket on the bottom and it still looks fine to me lol.

I also dragged the rear bumper on some rocks in Moab this weekend and magically the bumper is still there! I was really hoping that it’d rip off so that I could buy the lil b’s rear bumper, but I guess I’ll have to wait. Totally understand (and agree with) the sentiment against plastic bumpers, but they’re decently stout for off-roading.

To be fair to @Silver17 's comment, I will grudgingly admit I partially agree with some of it.
I'm not a big fan of all the low-hanging plastic and a grille that cracks if you look at it cross-eyed.
But, my truck only occasionally sees off road, so I'm not worried about it. I bought it primarily to tow.

 

Agreed. That's not what a rugged vehicle is supposed to have. It makes new tundras look like princess city grocery getter cars.

 

All this whinging about shit that was done to fix all the whinging from before.

"It breaks if it hits a deer" Yeah, no shit. It's called a crumple zone so you don't die when your dumbass hits something more than a deer. That's why modern vehicles are as safe as they are. They are sacrificial in an accident in order to preserve the passengers.

"I don't like the lower valance or the drop down aero pieces" Yeah, and a decade ago everyone was bitching about lack of MPGs because gas was over 5 bucks a gallon.

The public is insufferable and impossible to please.

 

Is it regulatory overreach or smart engineering progress? I guess it all depends what team you’re batting for that day. Whatever the case may be, stay away from those trash cans!

 

I'm not "batting" for anyone. I understand where a lot of it comes from. The safety stuff is regulated/required because of the public's bitching. Both my comments are congruous.

As for the trash can impact and the damage, yeah a thick trash bin designed to contain a couple hundred pounds of trash will win against the thing body plastics designed to give, crumple, and shatter to dissipate energy in a crash. No one should be surprised by this.

As for the cost of the repairs, blame goes around a few different places for that, but I'd primarily point toward the US moving off the gold standard. Turns out imaginary money isn't worth as much!

 

I feel bad for saying this but... my main takeaway from that garbage can picture was "those are obnoxious wheels, why do I like them so much?".
