Dealing with the 'rat chewed my knock sensor' story that everyone has on here... I kept throwing a code with the 3rd party harness... so I bought an OEM harness and as I went to plug it in (tried to shortcut it with the lifting of the manifold), I realized I had loose cables in the harness from the loom... omfg.

Trying to trace this down... i'm kind of at a loss.

Well, this sucks...no way around it...you need new pins and some patience...you're very capable of knocking this out, but I'd walk away for a bit, come back after some rest and see if you're able to depin and reuse them...

That sucks, they make a molex connection tool and pin kit, and similar if you want to try and reconnect the pins, or you could go wire by wire and just use butt connectors or male and female spade connectors if you want to be able to easily take it apart again, and just skip the plugs, just label the wires so you know what’s what in the future

This is time consuming but in no way impossible. Get a pin removal tool or use a needle. Unhook the battery, depin the plug, add a little
More to each connection and add new pins. Then plug those pins into the factory connector. You can get the pin kits on Amazon for 20 bucks or so.

Not a hard fix. You can get new pins from the dealer and just solder them on.

So... I broke the white locking mechanism trying to get the Y56C8 plug off to repin. Shit.

I bought a macgyver type-replacement and am wondering if I were to appropriately match and splice the pigtail, I'd be fine? Or just suck it up and re-crimp new pins on the bad half?

Any tricks to get the new lock out?

    --

    EDIT

Apparently I only need to move it a few mm... It doesn't come out.

    Question about splicing still open.

Instead of splicing, re-pin the new plug with the original wires.

4 are good... 4 need to be fixed and then repinned. I can splice it easier than putting new tips on but I hear ya.

Gotcha. In that case as close to the end of the original wiring as possible.

If you don’t have the length on the original wires just to add a new pin on, you can cut the whole connector off and butt connect the new pigtail on.

It’s scary the first time you hack up a factory wiring harness with a pigtail, but I can tell you it’s not abnormal. In fact the brake switch repair for a 2009 wrx sedan entails cutting the old Nissan connector off and putting a new pigtail on to accept a different sensor. This was a dealer supplied solution to replace the crappy sourced Nissan brake switch.

Does the top row match the bottom row in terms of wire placement? When I found it; one entire row had been pulled out. Two of the four rubber gaskets were still in.

Thx! Getting ready to dive in!

I don’t know, but what color are the wires on the other side that it plugs into? That might give you an idea.

otherwise maybe someone else can chime in or you can look at a wiring diagram

Success! Splicedin the pigtail to give me more cable if I have to replace it again (STUPID RATS!).

Put it all back together, cleared the codes and started it up. Now she needs a well deserved bath and a long drive!

The other side didn't match at all... It was only green and red.

Gambled and went with the same color on top as on bottom.

I mean, that’s a BMW though, so it’s to be expected that you’re going to have some “interesting issues” pop up from time to time.
