One of my tailgate cables came loose where it attaches to the bed rail. The bolt is connected to the cable, but unfortunately, the nut must have fallen to the bottom inside the bed rail. So there is nothing to screw the bolt into, just an open hole.

Has anyone experienced this problem? And if so, do you have any pointers on how to repair it? I'm on vacation and would rather not spend a day at the dealership, if a DIY repair is possible.

I've searched for a schematic, but so far haven't had any luck. If any of you have one that shows how that area comes apart, please share.

    Thanks in advance.

You can gain access to that area by removing the taillight. Theres a few bolts on the inside near the cable, and then it should just pop out. Good luck.

    Thanks!

Do you happen to know what the cable bolt attaches to? Is it some sort of bracket, or just a nut and washer? What are the chances that hardware is laying in the bottom of the bed rail?

If so, looks like removing the taillight assembly would give you access.

Yes, removing the tail light gave me access.

Unfortunately, the bottom of the bed rail is open, so whatever the cable bolt attaches to is long gone.

I used a nylock nut and a washer to temporarily secure it until I can get the proper connector, whatever that may be.

    Thanks for responses.
