I need your help deciding what to do.

i have a 2020 1794 with about 102k miles. Awesome truck, and we prefer it vs the Highlander for family errands, hauling, hunting, etc.

the issue is that it is using oil; already changed pcv valve, not a drip of oil on my driveway so my only conclusion is that it is burning it.

i have an extended warranty until 170k. Given all of those details, would you sell it? Have it looked at?

    What would be your advice?

have considered trading for a 2021 so 2.5 gen model and to hope it doesn’t burn any oil.

68k more miles of extended warranty? I’d have it looked at.

Up to a quarter every 5k.

Bought it used but I’m not underwater on it. Would probably have around 8k-ish after selling and paying loan off.

Quart every 5K miles? No one going to warranty that. That's easily in Spec.

Hopefully a Toyota tech can back me up on this but a quart every 5K would not be considered excessive consumption by warranty standards. In fact, that’s pretty good by GM standards. That’s said, the 5.7 is not known to burn oil. I’d probably want to look into it a monitor, but I wouldn’t be at the point of dumping a truck I liked otherwise.

5k seems normal, my 02 Celica was burning a quart every 1k miles. Pretty much an oil change before it was due. Still changed it to be safe. There was a quiet fix put out, but not under a TSB nor recall.

Apparently yall’ve never needed to clean the heads on an engine burning oil. Granted, the smaller valve ports can increase fuel milage.

My ‘80 f150 started to drink half a qt every 3k, a vacuum hose fixed it. Lets see a pic of the vc’s, the rear of the block (as best as possible), the exhaust pipe, pics of the sparkplugs, cause they cant be doing great.

I would love it to be just that. In the case of your f150, was the hose worn out, kinked, nicked?

Dry rotted. A little too much engine flex, and the hose cracked. I plugged both sides because it went to the egr valve, and nobody needed that.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
Put a catch can on it. I know they're more commonly used on SC'd set ups.

I've ran one for several years, and I've always been surprised how much there is at the oil change. 'Oil that would have been routed through the intake and burned.

    its not always condensation.
My favorite are the beat to shit nissans from the 90’s trying for diesel cosplay. I’d like to feel worse for the folks with new cars, or people with cvt’s, but i cant really relate.

Might be worth pulling the plugs to see whether any cylinder is showing more oil than the others. That might support a warranty claim, especially if that cylinder also shows low compression.

Can you tell us how you determine it was burning oil?
I mean, I don't exactly measure how much oil I dump out during every oil change, so I guess I don't necessary notice it was drink it.....

If I traded it in it wouldn't be for a model a year newer. My buddy traded in his 2019 for 2017...probably the direction I'd go too. I'm a bigger fan of the older 2.5 gens. The 2nd gens, properly cared for, are great too. Sure they have the older body style, but I've seen some really sharp looking rigs in that year range.

    IF I had a choice and chance, I would change my 21 for a 19 or 17, 4WD.
Sometimes I do wonder if I should rip the whole 21 out and get rid of the nannies, but it has proved to be too much....

Ah, OK. Understood. I guess I just didn't care enough to check it that often.
But as other have said, if you have extended warranty, have it checked out for it. Make it work for you to make it worth it.
But some if not most dealer would not even bother with it, you might have to see how to make it work for your advantage.

Yeah, I mean, if this is normal behavior for this engine, then I don’t really have to worry about it, but there are people here that have Tundras that don’t burn any oil. Wish I was in that camp for peace of mind.
