I tried searching the 1st gen forum and didn't find anything. So here is my question: how does the Toyota security feature work in our first gens? When I acquired my 2006 four years ago, I had a Viper alarm/security system installed. All was good until about a month ago, I dropped my keys on the ground and suddenly my Viper fob didn't work. Maybe the battery in the Viper fob shifted out of place or something. But it got me thinking, do I want to rely on an aftermarket system? With the factory alarm system, if the truck is broken into, will the truck not start if "hot wired"? I know if the truck is broken into, the alarm will sound. But what else, if anything, is going on to prevent the truck from being stolen.

My only other backup security system is my edc .357mag revolver, but that only works if I'm present and witnessing the theft. And even then, I'd prefer not to go that route unless its a last resort.

I apologize if this has been addressed/answered, I just didn't find it.

For some extra peace of mind - I have two apple AirTags in my truck. I took the speakers out of them so you can’t hear them. One in a random tool (incase tools are stolen) and another is hidden inside the truck.

it’s just an extra step I take. Had a buddy get his stolen and the AirTag help him get it back within an hour
