I have a 2017 tundra and I plan on changing the transfer case fluid. Do you recommend thread sealant on both the fill and drain plugs? Can I use Teflon tape or another thread sealant?

No need for thread sealant on the fill but the drain yes. Make sure you remember how far the drain stud goes in the case or how far it stick out. Since there’s no neck on the stud it will go all the way in if you keep turning it. I forgot what sealant i used. I’ll look when i get home tonight.

This is what I used for thread sealant and torqued 18 lbs (based on Toyota specs).

Can confirm Teflon tape works fine on both plugs.

I changed mine and did not use anything. 0 issues, no need for any type of sealant, works just like any other drain plug on the truck.

Same here. Does the service manual specify it?

Service manual suggests installing new plugs (36136-0C010) and they come with that pipe dope thread sealant pre-applied.

Thanks. Didn’t realize this was a thing. I changed mine about 30K ago but didn’t use anything and reused the plugs.

I've done that too when I couldn't find my Teflon tape, no leaks for 30k miles either.

Thanks for all the replies, lots of good responses.
I think purchasing new plugs is overkill

Just clean off the sealant and apply new.
