It's been 2.5 yrs since our Yellow Lab passed. Yesterday while driving on US RT 250, a busy two lane curvy 55 MPH road we saw a brown medium sized dog walking willy nilly on the road somehow avoiding being hit. We stopped and got traffic safely stopped, including semi trucks and loaded up this stinking, matted dog with a shock collar. Too early to call the pound, we went to the Ohio Valley Boat Sales, a mile away and they gave us some water and a paper bowl and took our contact information. Once the pound opened we called and took the dog to check for a chip. This dog was well behaved and knew heel, sit and stay. There was a chip but no information in the database. If no one claimed the dog in 72 hours it was to be ours. Just as we filled out the adoption papers the owners called. I guess it wasn't meant to be.PXL_20250422_140201796.jpg PXL_20250422_140156814.jpg

It took them that long to get their dog? They clearly don’t care

And it gets worse. The pound texted my wife asking if it was OK that she gave the dog's owner my wife's number. They wanted to call and thank her. Well, that's not the reason they called. Evidently the Dog Warden read them the riot act for the condition of the dog and not having a dog tag. Seems the owner thinks that we told the Warden about the dog's condition. Well, I'm thinking the Warden has seen a dog or two and knows a wee bit more than I do about animal abuse. The dog owner further went on and on saying the dog was last seen about an hour before we found it and that it was impossible that the dog could have gotten out of the locked garage by himself. He didn't come our and accuse us of stealing his dog but sure made it clear that's where he was going. So a polite good bye and that's that.

I'm almost wishing I would have taken the dog to a Vet and check for a chip instead of the pound. Asshole.

I travel that route twice weekly and if I see that dog on the road again.....

BTW, he was in fact an American Water Spaniel named Mudd. and I have just the spot for him in the Tundra, on my 4-wheeler and boat.

Edit: He never did thank my wife for doing her part to return the dog. I'll bet he drives a clapped out Ford and his mother wears Army boots.

Yeah...not sure where you live but it's HOT as F In the summer in South Texas!!! Over 100 is pretty common.
Being from Dutch ancestry I should burn pretty easily but for whatever reason I can stand the sun and rarely burn unless I pass out on a lawn chair at the beach.
You cant walk across concrete let alone asphalt barefoot unless it's in the shade.
I Shit you Not I've seen blisters on peoples feet after a drunken walk across asphalt to buy beer at the beach!!
Of course the older I get the less I can stand the Texas heat.
This place gets like Hades in mid summer!!
The Wife and I plan to move to cooler climes when She retires in a few more years.

Following back up on the food allergy; I forget the brand but I picked up an $80 bag of dog food that’s primarily cat fish as the fats will help with the coat not being dry either. I don’t know of any dogs allergic to cat fish. He loves it so far

We have always feed our dogs sardines on their food bowls to help with dry skin. They love them.

She's been home now for a few hours. Learning quickly too. Right now I'm reading up on the microchip fiasco. I'm leaning away from paying the $125 registration fee and just doing what I've always done. Make sure there is a sturdy tag on her collar with my name, phone number and REWARD stamped on it. I've never lost a dog and never had one get away from me.

The microchip can be great. Our vet is adamant about them doing the registration because many pet owners never complete the registration.

Call around and price shop if interested.

Your tried and true method can work as well.

Here's an example of the microchip problem and this happened to me last Tuesday.
The dog was chipped and the pound read the number. Looked at some paperwork in a desk drawer and called a number. Got tired of being on hold so hung up and called the second number only to speak to a person and be told the chip was registered but they had no information.

What may actually happen here is the first company called may have been the one that had the owners information and no other chip company had access to that information. There is a website by the AAHA that allows one to type in the number and links you to the company that sold the chip. When I do this it shows the dog and the breeder and a contact form. Now, if I scan the QR code on a collar tag given with the dog, it links to the chip seller's website and tells me "No information".

So if your chipped pet is lost you hope and pray the person reading the chip fully understands that the info may be out there but it may take some effort and patience to get it.

We settled on Emma. The name seems to go with a distinguished lady, in the country with morals and generosity. All that BS and our last Grandchild is named Emerson. If we kick the old bucket earlier than Emma, our oldest Son has agreed to take her as a pet for Emerson.
The hardest part has been training my wife. She doesn't seem to correlate giving a puppy water before bed and taking the pup outside at Midnight to pee.

That's heartbreaking. Is it legal to suggest to keep a Faraday cage in the truck and then EMP the chip when home with doggie, just for a safe measure? Dogs deserve good life. Their's is a short one.

Django was a good boy. And I'll never forget your son saying "dominance" in his metal voice. If I ever reply to something with "dominance", you'll know to read it in your head like him.
