Gotta assume the motor has a serious design flaw / design issue and something happened (or is likely to become public) that led the liability bean counters to recommend the stop sale. I’ve been looking at Sierras and would definitely buy the 3.0L Duramax over the 6.2. The 6.6 Duramax is well sorted out, but a pricy option.

See I was looking at the 3.0 duramax too, but I’ve heard that short tripping them isn’t good and is a no no. My wife would be driving it mostly and she often makes short trips to grocery stores and runs errands and stuff for the kids. So I’m torn between the 5.3 / 6.2 or the expedition max.

6.6 is practically the same as the 6.2 minus the DOD or AFM. The cams are interchangeable even. Different intake and exhaust profiles that favor more torque for the 6.6.

Yes, short trips aren’t the best for modern diesels from what I understand. I’ve been seeing some rumors that the Excursion might return with the Godzilla motor in the next couple of years, it who knows. A new Excursiom would be a compelling option for full size SUV buyers tho!

That damn AFM system, it was to blame for the oil consumption issue in my 2007 Sierra 5.3. Wonder if those systems are somehow the culprit here too.

The regen cycle for the DPF is the problem. Requires a long enough drive to complete. It’s on a schedule. If you start a regen cycle and it doesn’t finish, it tries again next time. The absurdity of it is that it basically burns more fuel to heat up the DPF making the engine less efficient during cycles.

The AFM / DOD system is oil pressure driven, as is the VVT setup. So there’s a system of oil ports that use the oil pressure like a hydronic system to activate both systems. Paramount to use the DEXOS rated oil in order to perform as designed. The oil pump is also a variable pressure pump. It’s a cool piece of engineering that is undone by poorly manufactured / poor quality material parts.

EVERYTHING is garbage now. It's not just a couple or few, it is everything.

And you have to pay $40,000 for the privilege to own your garbage, plus insurance and taxes on your garbage. Yeah, 40k, what can you even buy for 40k?

Nothing new either, this has been going on for at least 10 years.

Going on 30k on the 2022 Silverado LT with the 5.3 I am currently in.

No issues. The chip for the AFM/DFM is absent from the factory, so hopefully thats a plus, which I believe it is.

So far its been a great vehicle. I dont haul or pull anything notable tho.

Oh and the seat trim is still intact and solid, who would have thought.... LOL.

They are not included. It ends in 24. They said they fixed the problem in the tooling for the new ones.

    No

what mechanical issue caused the recall?

    is it bad bearings

    is it poor fitment

    is it UAW labor?

I thought this was the lifters collapsing, but this is different

I did not know they were so closely related. Yet I don;t think anyone is reporting this problem on the 6.6’s and they aren’t part of the recall.

Pretty much every GM major engine family has a skeleton in its closet. 5.3 (valve rattle), 3.6 (internal oil leak) 6.6L Duramax ( European fuel pump trashing engine), any turbo engine turbo failures, 6.2 problem listed here. GM has had so many bad engine gasket issues I have lost count

Sure you get the antidotal mine ran 400k. But GM as an engine builder has a higher than average catastrophic failure or severe issue rate. So avoid them or transfer the risk with an extended warranty

My experience is GMs response is linear with what you spent as well. Never buy a cheap GM vehicle they piled rebates in; they will never fix it

The 6.6 Duramax / Allison is the best HD diesel powertrain right now by a long shot. Isuzu design, well sorted out and very few major issues.

Yeah well, GM thought it would be a good idea to manufacture the "Allison" themselves, we will see how long they last.

Problem is people keep buying the garbage they put out. One of the reason I didn't give into the new tundra. Not to mention Toyota wanted double my current lease payment. Yeah, like the 3rd gen was worth double, insane. Friend at work just bought a 25 Tahoe even though he knows about the lifter issues. That's what I cant grasp. You know there is a problem but your willing to risk $70k that you vehicle isn't one of them, mind blowing. The videos I have seen lately of the amount of garbage they are putting in these vehicles is ridiculous. They will NOT hold up for long term.

It’s not the same 10 speed that Fordband GM co-developed. Same deal as the ZF in the Ram.. designed and built to specs. The Allison / 6.6 Duramax has a great track record thus far.

Like I said, we will see how long they last. GM hasn't fixed the AFM issue since 07 when it came out. I just bought a 98 Z71, it doesn't have seat warmers or messaging seat, or any fancy electronic tech, but what it does have is a good old American iron block 350. To top it off, I dont need to be a rocket scientist to change out an alternator or starter, etc. Like Badwrech said, what they are putting out is garbage. I want to see what a 2025 vehicle will look like in 30+years, if they make it that long.

Keep that 98, sort of miss my old 97. Fuel pump was most common culprit, easy fix, everything else was simple too.

Miss my 95 Short wide manual and my 98 X-cab stepside. When Chevy was the deal for sure. Even my 2001 V6 manual short wide was a great truck.

Could you imagine going 70+ mph towing 15000 lbs and that crap happened?

There is an aftermarket fix that will run 1700-2700.00 depending on who you trust/use.

    IMG_7839.png IMG_7838.png

I'm not doing this again. I did a CP3 conversion on my current DM to help stave off disaster and 12000.00 coming out of my pocket. That cost 1750.00 and a few days of my time.

If these manufactures can't get their junk designed right the first time...I have different options for sure.

Probably the 2.7 turbo actually. About the same performance as the 5.3 with no AFM.

A ZF transmission mated to a deleted Cummins is very tempting. If it wasn’t for electronic issues RAM often suffers with, I think it would be an interesting platform. Looks good too.
