I would agree with @Sierradevil You can take the horse to the river, but you can't force it to drink the water.

I have first hand experience with this, currently trying to create some resources for other individuals in the same boat in my area. If anyone needs anything, feel free to PM me.

I received a text about my brother's neighbor in Montana.

He had been struggling for a long time with alcohol and PTSD.

Just want to remind everyone that going and discussing issues does not make you weak but rather the opposite.

I'm sure his son will be needing the counseling his dad never got...and a lot of it.

That is really sad. I hope the son can find peace despite his experience.

Suicide is so selfish. That probably sounds cold and there are situations (terminal illness for example) where it may be for the better, but it is what it is. I hope his son can find peace and/or not repeat his dad's selfish decision.

    Praying for him

Very sorry to hear this and condolences to your friend and the families affected. I am a product of counseling and recommend it to anyone who is open to it. Helped me and my family tremendously.

that said, I think there has been a concentrated effort to destigmatize mental health and reaching out for help. What we haven’t done as well of a job in is making treatment affordable and accessible. It is dangerous, in my mind, to have the spotlight on mental health and encouraging vulnerability to reach out for help, but then be stonewalled with the prospect of not being able to afford or wait three weeks to even be seen. Once the accessibility and affordability improves I hope that we will see a sharp decline in these types of situations. Sadly we aren’t there yet

Sorry to hear this story you mentioned. Had an academy classmate of mine commit suicide back in 2011. It was horrible! I went to a survivor meeting and to hear the heartbreaking stories of mothers whose sons had come back from the middle east conflicts truly broke your heart. I hope this gentleman's son can find help to deal with that screwed up situation.

I agree it is selfish from our perspective. From their perspective it could be relief. Pretty sure someone that is willing to end it all isn't thinking clearly.
