I grew up so poor is not even funny. I made a promise to myself that I will not nor anyone in my family be poor like I was. I have zero bills since 2005 besides the monthly gas, electricity, food and all that.

As you said is the best feeling in the world but tell you what. There is something else that tops that. USA, the best country in the world. Me as first generation legal immigrant I owe everything to this country and its people. That is a much better feeling :) *MURICA :)

I've owned 6 vehicles in my lifetime, paid cash on 5 and one was given to me. I would never finance a vehicle if I can help it. The issue is that cars are getting so expensive these days (because idiots buy them for the payment, with insane loan terms), that it is putting me in the higher mileage/used market. That is fine with the 2nd gen's, but some of these newer planned obsolescence vehicles are going to be a challenge in the future when buying used.

And there is no way I'm going to spend 75K on a truck.

That is exactly how I felt looking at the turd gen. Crazy insane pricing for a truck.

You guys are the exception. Most that buy a vehicle will finance it through the dealership and the main concern is not what they are paying but if I can make that monthly payment. To lower the payment they will finance over 72 months. Want the bigger tires and lift? We can finance that as well and it will only add $50 to your monthly payment.

Yea, that’s kind of my point. People only look at the payment these days. Makes it hard for us paying cash.

It does, walking into a dealership with cash in hand to get a better price doesn’t exist. Saying “I’m considering financing it for the next 72 months” will get you a better deal.

Depends, yes and no. Two weeks ago I got me daughter a 2025 Honda CRV, basic one. It was $31.5K MSRP and got it down to $28K before taxes and paper works. It was cash transaction and if I was to finance it I wouldn't get the same deal. So it really depends. I am in Texas.

With almost every customer financing a vehicle purchase why would a dealership sell for a lower price to a cash customer? There is good money to be made when the customer finances. Maybe the dealership was needing to meet a sales target for the month and just needed the sale.

I simply negotiated a price with the dealer for our last two vehicles. When the salesman asked if I needed financing, said nope and handed him a bank check for our negotiated price. Done. Give me the keys and title please. See ya

I'm around $0.25/mile. Been paid off for 17 years. Haven't broken down once, most parts are still original outside of wear and tear items.

Ah the smart way to negotiate. Get a price before the finance talk. A smart saleperson would have asked "will you need to finance today" before giving out a price.

I've always gotten more rebates and discounts by financing and the interest rate on the loan was always a fraction of what my money was gaining while invested. I'll take the 1.9% auto loan to get 15%+ with my money invested elsewhere.

This is frustrating man. We went through this with a family car and it was not fun. Get some tools and do it yourself is my answer.

I’m have first hand experience with this recently, so ignore others, though I’d presume it could be different in different states and conditions.

I was t-boned in my 2021 Tacoma (the truck that I had before getting my Tundra) and filed for diminished value, insurance cost I incurred while the truck was out of commission and for a new car seat. All of which accumulated to an check for $1,700 from the drivers insurance company.

For diminished value, I simply imputed trade in offers for Carmax. I made sure they were identical in every way, except one showed no accident history and one showed one serious collision (or whatever they classified the accident damage as on their assessment tool).

I did have to trick the Carmax systems bit because it didn’t want to complete two offers on the same VIN, but there’s ways around it.

For insurance, I did monthly rates divided by that months days, multiplied by the days the truck was in the shop.

For the car seat, I just submitted the cost of the same model replacement.

I submitted it all via a single diminished value form from the insurance company I was submitting it to and they issued a check without contest.

    This was in Colorado.

Diminished value is not “for people with upside down loans”. My Tacoma was paid for in full, I’m not an irresponsible vehicle owner with massive debt. Tundra was bought with cash too….claiming the $$$ due to you, from an accident that you weren’t “at fault” for, is actually the financially responsible thing to do. I might pay cash for 1-3 year old trucks, but I’m not a multimillionaire. $1,700 is $1,700 I’d like to have, spend, invest, etc. No shame.

That's awesome. I wish I knew. I think is too late for me to go this path.

Yeah, the duct tape thing sounded sketchy. I've never seen wheel weights with duct tape. I'd be super concerned over that.

It might not be too late. I submitted all that about 2-3 months after the wreck, but it was technically before they paid out on it (a whole other story). I ended up trading the truck in to CarMax with the t-bone damage and took the insurance check to the bank.

I’ve seen shops use duct tape to secure the weights while test spinning the wheels, just to make sure no changes are needed and wheel weights are wasted or unnecessarily removed right away.

They are suppose to remove the tape and properly adhere the wheel weights after a good balance confirmation though. Sounds like the tire guy forgot that step, not that he meant to put them on either duct tape.
