I bought a 2023 Tundra new and since I'm a retired GM transmission mechanic I wanted a Toyota. But to my suprise my Tundra has a 1-2 shift issue but only on the 1st shift of the day or after it sits for 4 hours or so. Under acceleration moderate to heavy it throws me forward just like it went into neutral and then shifts into second. Toyota did 5 transmission downloads to the computer and each time it screwed up a different shift or made them more harsh. I decided to give Toyota a second chance. So I traded it in on a 2025 TRD same crappy problem I haven't gone back to the dealer yet, frankly nervous they will download something and I will start all over again. I believe a servo or clutch housing is bleeding off but they say the transmission is normal LOL. Anyone else having a issue like this?

I am having some issues that may be similar, but it doesn't have anything to do with time of day or when it sat. I feel my torque converter is having issues and struggles to disengage at times. I can feel harsher shifts in the lower gears - especially downshifts into 1-4 where it almost feels like someone is driving a stick poorly and grinding gears.

In my case, however, this was never present the first few thousand miles - only presented itself (as well as some level of transmission whine) after around 8,000. I'm sure Toyota will tell me it's normal or do a new calibration to the ECU/TCU, so I'm dealing with it for now and will have them look in a couple thousand when I take it in for maintenance. Maybe by then it will have gotten bad enough they can't deny there's an issue.

My transmission was the smoothest, quietest I've ever owned - initially, at least....

My 2024 does the same thing every morning. First shift 1-2 feels like it slips/hangs for a second. Enough that I too sort of move forward during the delay. After that it’s fine the rest of the day.

Edit: this is reported every so often on the tundra FB groups. Not so much around here.

More of what I feel in the "Morning sickness mode" right after a cold start is more like the throttle response feels like it responds in "steps" or notchy rather than linear in the throttle plate vs pedal control of the engine. Just doesn't feel "connected". Even to the point of the momentary dead pedal everyone here talks about. Get any temperature in the engine and it runs fine or normal. Transmission may be following suit in those conditions as it's looking at throttle position input???

    (Old, grey driveability wrench here...)

Never. My '23 is the smoothest shifting truck I've ever owned. If it wasn't for the change in RPMs, I'd never know when it shifts gears.

I hope you can get your's resolved.

The first couple shifts in mine are more-loose than I would like. Sometimes a slight hang or delay.

I like snappy, firm shifts. If I were to ever buy a performance car, i'd want a dual clutch....or manual.

My first shifts have gotten better as my truck has worn in. I don't even notice it anymore.

I was really worried when thought it was slipping between gears until I realized what I thought were shifts were TC locks and what I thought were slips are shifts to the next gear with the TC unlocked.

My 2025 (non-hybrid) with 2k miles does the exact same thing although not after a 4hr shut down. Mine happens after backing out of my driveway and shifting to "D". I don't notice it at all when going from "P" to "D".

I've been told by others in here that after reversing, coming to a complete stop, and putting the truck into "D", the transmission is defaulting to 3rd gear instead of 1st. Possible TSB regarding this.
It feels like the tranny is slipping between 1st and 2nd, rpm's jump way up, and then 2nd hits hard.

After backing out of my driveway and before proceeding in drive, I can slide the shifter from "D" to "S" and the dash displays either "S3" or "S4" which is weird. In my mind the truck should be in S1 when in "D" and at a complete stop.
Some in here argue the dash display is wrong ... or just a range that the tranny is in which would make almost no sense. Just show me what gear I'm in.

This morning I manually downshifted into "S1" and took off without the slip although I took it easy and used the shifter to advance to S2.

I think you are bit confused about the S shifting mode. When you shift into S-mode, the number displayed on the dash isn't the necessarily the current gear the transmission is in. It's merely the highest gear the trans will shift into.

So, for example, if S4 is displayed on the dash, when you come to a stop, the trans will still downshift to 1st gear. As you accelerate from the stop, the trans will shift thru gears 1-4 as usual, but 4th gear is as high as it will go, unless you select a higher S-gear.

Not sure what else we can say. Your truck does not start in third gear from a complete stop. I think most would agree that S mode doesn't work like we think it should but it is what it is.

My first shifts of the day always lurch and rev. Seems worse when cold.

Mine doesn't fully downshift unless I get below 2 mph. If I roll a stop, it stays in 3rd. Kind of annoying.

Same here, then fact that when slowing down or coasting up to a "rolling" stop or going around a corner, you're in 3rd gear and the turbos are wound down leaving no boost for a few moments (turbo lag)

Yep just noticed this today. First shift hung up for a second and then went on like normal.

I've got to stop reading these problem threads, because it's stuff I really wouldn't notice otherwise. When I read an issue someone is having, I start looking for it (and usually finding it) when it's not something that would've been a problem if I hadn't read about it.
    :annoyed:

    Ignorance is bliss I guess.

Drove mine cold this week. Noticed the first 1-2 shift was awkward.

I've owned several cars over the years that shift differently when cold. I don't lose sleep over it.

Now the crank bearings, that's something I do lose sleep over.
