Buying a 2022 Tundra this week

Hi, new member here. Looking forward to getting back into a Toyota soon. I have had a few in the past, going back to my first truck a '93 DLX Pickup and my all-time favorite, a 2008 FJ.

I am hoping to line up a deal on a '22 Tundra SR5 this week. I am not in the position to purchase a new truck so I will be dealing with the recall. I ran the VIN, and it seems the vehicle is showing an active recall. I assume this means it has not already been addressed for that particular truck. Please correct me if I am wrong on that.

If I am reading correctly, at this point I could schedule the recall with a dealer in advance. I would then be placed in a queue for the replacement engine. Is that the current situation?

For those of you who have been through this recently, what is the typical time from scheduling to replacement. I read through some posts on this forum from earlier in the saga of failures and it seems the situation might be different now vs. sitting for months. I would certainly not be happy with that.

I am trading in a 2022 Frontier Pro-4X that has been excellent and rock solid. I am reluctant to sell it because I love the truck, but my needs have changed. Between space issues on camping trips and wanting to get a travel trailer, the Tundra would be a better fit. I was also looking at F-150 with the 5.0, but my last Ford which was a 2021 Ranger was a bit of a turd. The thing was in the dealership 5 times in the year I owned it, and I just got sick of that... Hoping the Tundra won't be like that after the engine swap.

I bought my 22 with 2 open recalls. The fuel line, which was temporarily remedied before I bought it, and the engine recall. My truck had higher miles, over the highest mileage on the list that's out there, which was 69K (mine had 71K) I have almost 81K now and it runs like a top. It is my understanding that a dealership can't sell a truck with an open recall unless it's deemed safe. Obviously, this is a safety recall so it should not pass that reasoning. I also thought that there had to be a remedy available, which wasn't the case when I bought my truck 7 months ago. The truck your looking at might not be "ready" yet as it depends on the manufacture date so that might affect the scheduling of the motor replacement.

I think the deal to be had is a higher mileage 22 that hasn't had the recall performed yet. You get the big discount for the miles depreciation, then turn around and get a brand new motor.

I do like stories of high mile 3rd gens on original motors.

I had 99k on my 22 Platinum and it ran perfect. Never had one issue mechanically with that truck. I did oil every 5k and I did my best to always run top tier fuel. I’ve had a bunch of Tundra V8’s and none of them had that much milage when I traded out but they were also trouble free. I was going to keep it but my dealer got me into a new 24 and I couldn’t resist. The only problem I had with my 22 was that it’s resale value was not as strong as my older Tundras. With that being said someone bought my 22 at a decent price and with over 100k miles they will be getting a brand new engine.

I'm assuming the weak resale was because of the open recall? Or the negative publicity on the third gens?

The recall didn’t help, all the negativity doesn’t help, but they truly are great trucks. Almost everyone that owns one can attest that it’s probably the best truck they’ve ever owned or driven in.

Only negativity to be had is from 2nd gen owners usually. I have no problem with 2nd gen myself, or 3rd gen. We are all Toyota owners. I see no problem, Toyota is taking care of their mess one at a time.

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! I hope you have a great experience and a long life for your Tundra after the engine is swapped!

I think toyota needs to start giving them away for free. Get as many of them on the road, to show that they're reliable trucks! Get the disposable base versions rolling everywhere.

I love mine. Id change a few smaller things, but it's excellent where it counts.

I'll do 5k oil changes and keep a Toyota extended warranty on it.

Looks like I’ll be sticking around here for a while. I purchased a 2023 SR5 4x4. I got a pretty good deal as the truck was sitting on the lot for 2 months.

No major plans for mods although I may change the shocks to bilsteins or some other basic off-road oriented shocks. I may also bump the tire size up a little bit but nothing crazy. My primary purpose for the truck is to get to camping and fishing spots with nothing being too far off the beaten path. Slight possibility I might add a locker and winch too. Ok I guess I’m modding it…

The build date is March 2023 so I guess that is the first batch of trucks post recall. I hope that ends up being ok for me in the long run. I see that 2024+ may have a revised rod end bearing design but I’m not sure if it’s really confirmed that the new part number is something different or speculation.

I'm afraid your truck is no less susceptible to the engine failure possibility as the recalled trucks. Engines that were built as late as the fall of 2024 have been reported to have grenaded from the same bearing failures.

I'm right there with you. My truck was built in 6/23. I'm at 22K miles, which seems to be within the sweet spot for most of the engine failures. I'll just drive it like usual, and deal with it if she blows.

Good luck with your new truck.

Wow that is a bit of a shock. I wonder if the recall will end up being expanded… Anyhow I purchased the best warranty available to me through my credit union. Truck is 100% covered to about 150k miles. I also have 2 years and 25k miles remaining on my powertrain warranty.
