You have a short somewhere. Make sure nothing is bent in the bulb sockets

So just to be clear, I’ve had my LED dome and vanity lights for a few months now without any issues. Tonight I installed my footwell lighting kit from VLEDS, and now I’m getting a quicker burnout on the fuse. Same advice / recommendation? Or does that change anything I should be looking at?

Well if you where not having any issues double check what you installed maybe a lose connection or something really small causing the short. I don’t think going with a bigger fuse would be wise unless your pulling a lot of power.

Thank you sir, appreciate the advice. For what it’s worth, here’s a pic of the new lights in all their glory (I dig the red — looks more pink in this pic than it is in person):

I did not use a PosiTap to power the lights. The VLEDS kit comes with an adapter that you plug directly into the driver side footwell light receptacle, which powers the full string throughout the cab (i.e., the three other footwell lights are powered off this single source).

No trying to hijack this thread, but I just did an LED interior replacement today and blew the 10 amp dome light fuse on my 2020 Tundra. Temporarily replaced it with a spare 7.5 amp fuse and so far everything is working fine, but are the low profile, mini blade fuses you see on Amazon the same ones that work in our trucks? Wanted to check before ordering some.

Hopping in this thread cuz my dumb butt did the same thing everyone else apparently did and blew the fuse. First MOD I went for on my brand new truck with less than 1500 miles. Installed at night so the truck was running so I could have the dome light on while working on the map light and visa versa. First bulb and poof, no interior lights (map, vanity or dome). Hoping it’s a simple fuse issue. Thank god for this thread!

I attempted this same mod as it seemed relatively easy and low cost. Replaced both the dome lights and map lights with LEDs. Blew the fuse. Replaced. Blew the fuse again.
I know what happened, but I can't seem to fix it. When I pushed in the map lights, I pushed them in too far and pushed the "wiring" off the plastic board. I took the assembly down (very easy - just 4 torx screws) and tried to push the metal traces back onto the plastic, but I've never been able to make it right. I tried reverting back to factory bulbs but the issue continues. I've had to disconnect the map light assembly to keep the dome lights working, otherwise no interior lighting. Word to the wise, if you're going to do this mod, I would highly recommend taking the assembly down and carefully replacing the bulbs. While it seems simple to pull a bulb and insert another one, once you screw up the little metal traces on the board, it is very difficult to get things to work again. Just my $.02.

UPDATE: Finally found time to search for the fuse. It was a 10A in the interior block under the drivers side. Back to having interior lights now, but I think I damaged the map light switch somehow during all of this. Now the map light on the drivers side will only stay on of I hold the switch button in.

Just had the same issue with mine, first 3 went in great, #4 the contacts popped off and I had to fish them out. Saw the telltale tiny spark and poof, no lights. Changed out the 7.5A fuse under the hood (which looked fine) and still no lights. Going to pull the assembly, glue all the sockets, trim the reflectors and see what happens. duho...

Read this whole thread a little while ago before ordering VLEDs. Then my dumb ass still forgot to disconnect the battery. I installed the map lights and dome lights with no problem (except for it being very difficult to seat the bulbs). Then blew a fuse installing the footwell light and lost it, along with the map and dome lights. It ended up being the “dome” 10 amp fuse in the cabin fuse box. Replaced it and all is good again.

Pulling the trim off and gluing the sockets down worked well on 3 of 4, need to finagle the 4th a little, still too loose. Ordered new bulbs (Sealights), much better quality then the first set, also sized more appropriately for amp draw. Not quite as bright, but no blown fuses so far. Definitely still a huge upgrade from stock.

Thanks Doc! 'Stupidly' tried a massive upgrade today, replace my interior lights. First one in, then no lights in the cabin! I've done a couple electrical changes on my 2014 (android head unit and new LED headlights) and of course removed the negative cable; but c'mon, interior map light?! After searching for which fuse it could be on the interior and exterior fuse box, finally saw Doc's answer here and yep, that was the one! Thanks Doc!

If anyone is still having an issue with this, you may find this link helpful. It provides locations and photos for reference. The first time I looked for my dome light fuse I simply missed it in the engine compartment fuse box even though it was pretty obvious once I found it. https://fuseandrelay.com/toyota/tundra-2g.html

Got a 2019 tundra and I’m throw my dumbass hat into this ring. Cheap half working leds from Amazon. Bent the map light prongs inserting the new leds and as half didn’t work I put back the old bulbs instead. When I was fiddling with the map light bracket I blew a fuse.
Under the hood a green 40 amp and under drivers 10 amp needed to be replaced. All was working after that. I just need to take off the map light unit and unplug it to make some adjustments. I’ll hold off doing it until I install my new head unit.
    this thread was helpful thanks.

Must be something in the air. I did the same thing this morning. The first map light was no problem, the passenger side was a different story. I need to find a video on how to pull the map light assembly out because one set of prongs for the light pushed back into the socket. I hope it's not broken, no telling what all you have to buy to get that fixed.

Backup camera, camper shell, double din stereo, amp, sub, blind spot cameras, modest lift, newer Tacoma rims, large AT tires, interior lighting upgrades, in bed, under hood, as well as leds in cab, blue foot well strips (night driving)or bright white strips if need to see, 3 additional white leds on ceiling front L/ R and center, toggle switch's and added accessory fuse box.
Do you guys know if this applies to first Gen tundra as well? The interior lighting is so dim in these trucks, even with both map lights and dome lights on, I need a flashlight to find things I drop or that slide down that amazing gap between seat and center console. I currently added a battery powered light that has wall type switch in center, cheap $tore buy but helps alot. Also have those blue light strips from auto zone in all 4 foot wells, these get power from cig lighter. Right now I'm adding more accessories, led bed lights, 2 led strips under hood for light, white led foot lights I can turn on to see better the blue is mood lighting, my new door speakers have led lights 4 speakers= 8 lights, im adding more cameras to go with current backup cam, these will go on the sides, front, and drivers window(some sort of dvr for this camera at least) about to install some sort of fuse panel/distribution block for this. I would really like to add 2 so 1 can be constant and the other switched/keyed. Also adding 5 channel amp and powered sub but that's totally separate from my accessory project. What was I asking oh yeah led bulbs a problem in first Gen? Thought I read somewhere some of the cluster lights can't be led, if true I should switch back before I finish my project

I would say definitely your 3 setting light switch since the door lights are powered from the rubber plunger door stopper switch. You might just be able to bend the metal tabs back to make contact again

I would maybe go up to a 10 amp fuse but you'll still need to track down the cause of the problem

What a PITA this 'simple' upgrade has been. I blew a fuse today swapping my map lights. This was a non-issue in my Tacoma and 4Runner. I see that it is a bit of a challenge with a Tundra.

I have a 2016, and I think I may have screwed up the passenger side socket. I can't get a bulb to stay in place now. Ironically, the led went it easily, but then the fuse blew. I am torn between swapping the fuse and returning to OEM.

Is it safe to assume that since the fuse is blown and pulled, now is the time to swap all interior lights, or am I likely to blow another fuse? The lights were from Amazon - leftovers from my other vehicles.

I am thinking of taking the assembly down to see what is going on with the passenger socket. My eyes aren't what they used to be (which is one of the reasons I want LED lights) and I am having a difficult time seeing what the heck is going on up there. At the same time, I am hesitant since I already screwed stuff up today. I must have dropped the OEM bulb a half a dozen times... Is it a simple process?
