3rd gen - Rear bed step recommendations

Hello gang, any rear bed step recommendations, and/or quick reviews. Not a ton found searching, and thanks in advance for any replies.

Links certainly not required, but appreciated. I.e, so many listed on AMZN, would be good to know which one you are referring too.

 

I got this one and it works fine. Honestly, they all look the same design.

I got that one as well. Easy install. Works well.Like it.

 

Another satisfied user of the AMZ step linked above. Mine was from a different seller, but looks identical. I assume they all come out of the same factory.

 

This was a good mod for me. Just not as agile at 78 as I used to be. Coming from a Honda Ridgeline with the dual opening tailgate, getting into the higher Tundra was a challenge and PITA at times.

No problems. Easy install, fits well. Has seen offroad in the desert and salty boat ramps. Well, it doesn't come close to getting wet, but lots of dust in the desert and still works well. You do loose a little departure angle if you are getting crazy in the rocks.

 

I did have delusions of installing the power step, but that would mean the power running boards as well. Not in budget.

 

Another who purchased the cheap one from Amazon. I've had it for over a year. No problems. Works as described.

 

The bed height on these is not inconsequential...

I just wanted to add, you might notice that after installing, it will be touching the trim piece and I know a lot of folks are adding washers onto the bolts to push it out more, but I’ll say don’t worry about it. Just use it and over time it’ll stretch out and no longer touch the bumper. My personal experience.

 

I can’t get over how it looks. Not for me.

 

I wasn’t a fan on how it looked initially, but I needed a step with how often I climb in the back and it looks fitting after a while. Maybe I just got used to it but the practicality of it more than makes up for the looks in my opinion. Also kicking it back up and down is fun haha.

 

I've been using this. Not a fan of the side corner bed step since it's only 1 side. I wish they actually did what Ford did with their integrated step which comes out from the bed door.

This poor mans option gives me full flexibility to step from any position around the bed door, i just toss it in the bed and it's ready to go whenever I open the bed.

Just a thought...

 

I had an Amazon step on my 22 Tundra that I kept when I upgraded to a 25 Tundra which came with a step.

They are the same as OEM. I swapped the step itself to the OEM base. The bolts line up. The tread is a little different but the intended purpose isn’t any different.

 

We use this at my business. We have a golf cart for older folks and injured folks, and use this as a step assist for them. This thing can take a lot of weight and folds down nice and small. Been using it for almost 3 years now.

 

That is a very clever idea I am buying that right now. Yes having a step only on one side is limiting.

 

Technically you can run the power bed step without the power side steps. I wired up both, but standalone on either products is def achievable. The issue is the power bed step is $500, but it sure works great and looks super cool!

 

The powered step is level with the body, one of the other reasons I got it instead of the manual step…my OCD hates the angle of the manual one!

 

I live where it snows. Power steps are not anything you want on your truck if you live where it snows. Just don't go together, they freeze and don't work half the year, jealous of the folks who can run them.

 

I live in NJ so we get some snow, but not enough to worry me about it. I just got this truck so time will tell, but I had auto steps on my last 4Runner and never had an issue with freezing.

 

2 Minnesota winters so far and no issues but I will turn them off if I'm driving in slushy/freezing slopes just in case. Otherwise just let them do their thing.

 

Your winters are harder than mine. I had them in 2018ish...so maybe they've improved them.

 

Noob here. Just got a 25 SR5 Crewmax. I am coming from an F-150 with the tailgate step. It worked well and tucked out of the way. I wish Toyota could do the same. The bumper step is useless IMO whereas a tailgate step is what is missing, especially for those with camper shells/RTTs. Amazon has a few better options:

There’s more I haven’t listed, but I like this one as you can enter from more of the middle of the tailgate.

 

I went this route as well, I don’t get in and out of my bed enough to warrant a step and this doubles well for hitting some hard to reach spots when detailing.

 

The manual step sucks. It sits too low when deployed. The power step would be the way to go if you can make it work.

 

I like your approach. I find it difficult to clean the back side of the engine bay without something to stand on, along with trying to wipe down the rear window after washing. These would make it much easier.

 

Yeah, no need to add washers to space it. Change out the original rubber stopper on the arms for a thicker one, it makes a nice gap and makes it easier to engage with your foot.
