Like your confusion with Spanish, I get confused with southerners. The first time I heard "cut up," I was like what are we cutting? Or when someone once asked me if I wanted to "get up?" I said I'm getting up around 630, but I won't want to "hang out" with anyone at that hour. I'll need some coffee first at the very least.

To your point regional dialects are for real, no matter what language is being used. I've heard great things about Rosetta Stone if you do want to gain some conversational Spanish. I would also suggest you get the book 501 verbs. It's a game changer.

I/We sound nothing like Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) in "Fargo."

I do catch myself saying "you bet" more often than I'd like though.

Even though my wife grew up in Dallas (Pleasant Grove to be exact), she has a very East Texas accent/twang to her voice and the words she uses.
Many people ask her if she is from East Texas when they first meet her.

    You just wait
No aboots is Wisconsin but I will say our Northern neighbors, the Yoopers, definitely have a noticeable accent. Also, it's funny to think of yourself as having an accent because it's just the way you talk, but when my sister traveled to Scotland she was in an elevator at a hotel and the people there heard her say one sentence and immediately asked her if she was from the Midwestern part of the US lol.

I took 2 years of Spanish in high school and then never did anything with it. But a couple years ago we went to Costa Rica and for whatever reason I was able to basically communicate in Spanish. I definitely understood more than I could speak. My wife and friends that were with us were blown away so much they thought I had some secret life that I wasn't telling them about. It was kind of funny. We had a personal driver on that trip and I was talking to him and I used the word "coche" which means car in Spanish. He started laughing. I told him I was taught that it meant car. He said not in Costa Rica. That is a word for a woman's lower anatomy. We all laughed our asses off.

After living in Idaho with those Mexicans, I was sent to southern Spain for 4 months. Came home and eventually moved to Texas with those Mexicans (different regions in different states).

    Can confirm:

    Mexican is not Spanish.

I'm betting (Baby You Can) "Drive My Car" by the Beatles if sung in Spanish in Costa Rica has quite a different meaning also.

I don't get it, they are both pronounced the same.

They don't either. Manchester vs London. Or even different parts of London.
Scotland? Glasgow, Edinburgh or the highlands?
Don't even mention Wales. I think they speak an alien language.

It was more of a sarcastic response directed @nobodyintexas for referring to learning how to speak Mexican. Mexican isn't a language. Yet his dig showed more about his bias than it did about the Mexicans he was putting down.

See, i read it as he called it Mexican to differentiate from Castilian Spanish. Not to put anyone down. Feels like you're getting offended and projecting motives that weren't stated.

Actually I'm not at all personally offended. He said he was learning Mexican. It's not a language. Just like speaking southern English isn't its own language.

I've only ever been to Houston. It seemed like a cosmopolitan Losianna. But the traffic sucked worse. I'm up for Dallas, but I have to see where the deciding vote brings us next.
