On order, Chinese ship pulled a 180.

 

In this case, we're trying to teach our 4 year old daughter to sit at the table while she's eating instead of running all over the house and taking an hour and a half to eat.

So the rule is the first time she gets up from the table, she gets a warning. The second time, her food goes away and there's nothing else until the next meal time.

But any time I try to actually enforce that, my wife has some excuse why it's ok for the kid to get up from the table this time and how I'm being too strict.

But this happens with any rule my wife comes up with. The only rule she actually enforces in our house is "let the 4 year old do whatever she wants so we have to deal with fewer temper tantrums".

 

So, what you're saying is, you would, wood or no wood?

 

You think breaking rules and throwing tantrums is bad at 4, man you're in for some fun times when she's 14.

I think that is the problem with a large percentage of yutes today..
They were not told 'NO' when they should have been told "NO"..

This topic has been festering since my helicopter parenting comment.

I will give a few examples of things my wife and I experienced over the last month or two concerning this:

1. We were at a restaurant waiting for a table a few weeks ago.
These 2 small kids were climbing over the patio railing back and forth.
The Mom asked them nicely to PLEASE stop doing that in her gentle Mom voice.
They did it the entire time they were there.
My Dad, or Mom, would have snatched my ass up and sat me in a chair if I didn't do it on the first request.

2. While at Nebraska Furniture Mart, this kid was picking up and shaking a piece of artwork.
The noise it made was fascinating him for some reason.
The Dad sees this, takes it away for him, and tells him to go jump on the reclining couches as a distraction.

3. At the meat counter at Tom Thumb, a kid is telling his Dad he wants something.
Then the kid proceeds with 'I want it, I want it, I want it'.
Instead of telling the brat,' No you can't have it', this beta Dad tells the child, "Maybe tomorrow we can get it for you" I guess thinking the kid is going to forget about it.

My parents wouldn't take this shit from me, granted that was over 50 years ago.
But I was told no, I was taught how to fail at things and learn from it, I was taught not everyone gets a fucking participation trophy.
I was told if you're going to cry, I'll give you something to cry about..

My folks come from eastern Europe. They were immigrants and I am the first generation born here in America. When I got out of line, I was beaten. I had enough sense after enough beatings to where when my mother gave me that "look"...I knew I had to course correct or I was in for a beating. It's the old world mentality that they grew up with and and I grew up with myself. They were incredibly grounded people who made it their purpose to prepare me for the difficulties of life because life is incredibly hard. We have it so easy here that we have in many ways lost all touch with how the rest of the world lives.

I want to make this incredibly clear, there is a difference between punishing a kid for bad behavior vs abusing a child. One is punishment and the other should never be done. I know my parents raised me right because I look back at the beatings as an adult and I laugh my ass off and feel nothing but compassion for my parents who after working their asses off working a thankless shit job had to deal with a hyper kid in me.

I'm not advocating for people beating their kids but at the same time, an ass whooping when deserved goes a long way in encouraging the proper behavior.

I remember being a teen and my father said, son if my beatings don't set you straight then the jail system will be forced to. I don't want that for you. God Rest His Soul!

 

My kids will throw a tantrum even if the answer is "yes but please wait about 5 seconds while I deal with your siblings first". And my wife's response to screaming, crying or whining is to give them what they want.

 

I cannot imagine raising a kid and having to compete with social media

They'll wind up fine. My son was an extremely easy kid from birth to puberty. After puberty he was still chill and relatively well behaved, but he couldn't get a chore done on time (sometimes at all) without threats of dismemberment or imprisonment. Now he's one of the hardest working people I've ever met. (Steven says) Teaching them how to do things correctly doesn't always mean you have to make them do it correctly; even if it's helpful if they do. Plus his mom and I were in different homes, we had different means and methods, and he still got what he needed from both of us. They're way ahead having both parents in the same home.

 

Do you get slapped when you tell her she's making their behavior worse?
