    We got a dusting here too.

    Anyone know if i can use a cheap HF dc-dc charger between a lead acid & lithium battery? Both ways?

    I wouldn’t. Different chemistry, charge curves and conditions for a “full” battery I suppose.

    Circling back to here finally... my little fluke 115 does do capacitance, and I learned a new thing! Yay!

    All three of my capacitors aren't reading correctly. One is DOA (pink arrow. Being used as a jumper) Previous "repair" by the PO added in that other capacitor (red egg) spec'd at 55 +- 10% reading 38 microfarads. Out of spec, but still putting out the correct voltage. (370 VAC)

    The motor run (blue circle) is reading way off what it should be. Spec'd at 5 microfarads, and reading 1 microfarads. NG

    20250405_131641.jpg

    A new one correct capacitor is about $20 or so dollars. 60/5 microfarads. 370 VAC

    @FrenchToasty
    @bmf4069
    I watched this YT video, and dude clearly changes a 45/5 for a 35/5. Whats the deal there? Does the microfarads matter a lot? It doesn't matter to me, I'm simply trying to learn another new thing here.

    Time stamps in video:

    Capacitance depend upon the circuit and what it’s trying to do that matters. If you’re converting AC to DC for example, the capacitance determines the ripple content size.

    If you can find a multimeter with inductance in addition to capacitance, hold onto that sucker as they’re hard to come by nowadays.

    I purposely bought an LCR meter to do both capacitance and inductance over a wide range of sizes.

    Ripple current? :confused:

    I found the 60/5 by searching for manufacturers part number online, and then back tracking to nordyne (ours unit is a miller, made by nordyne.)

    I think the energy spike uses what it uses, and more farads just doesnt drain it as deep. Right? Until you get big enough to start melting wires?

    Ripple voltage. That’s how much the voltage will cycle about the average DC voltage. Typically less than 5% or 1% if you need a solid DC signal.

    For motors, they’re needed for instant current to keep the voltage stable at startup.

    The capacitor is co-located with the compressor so you can supply the current required during a spike. That same current is hindered by the wires that supply it from the outlet due to the inductance in the wire, so it can’t react as fast to provide the current required. Lack of the necessary current would cause the voltage to dip, so that’s how the capacitor keeps the voltage stable.

    To help make sense of it just remember two concepts:

    1. Current doesn’t move instantaneously through an inductor.
    2. Voltage doesn’t change instantaneously across a capacitor.

    Have you checked to make sure your system actually has refrigerant? I threw a bunch money in parts and time trying to diagnose mine last year, only to find out I had multiple leaks and no refrigerant left. I ended up having to replace my entire system.

    No problem. I hope that you don't run into the same issue as me. It cost me around $9,000 to replace a system that was only 8 years old. New HVAC equipment is a lot more efficient than the stuff from 20+ years ago, but it doesn't last as long. Seems like we're lucky to get 10 years out of them now.

    Yeah, We are running an 80% efficient furnace circa 1993. I've done the blower motor and Cap, and the main board, and of course cleaning the thermocouple when she gets finicky. But I think they are way simpler, less things to go wrong.
    We just run 2 carbon monoxide detectors, one upstairs and one down. She's had a good run so far, but I know the plenum is close to cashing in.

    ELI the ICE man.

    A lot of substations will have massive capacitor banks in them to equalize the power factor of the largely inductive loads inherent in the load side.
