There isn't a single credible person that says there's a better intake solution than the stock air box. When I bought my Tundra it had a K&N intake installed. The previous owner was sage enough to have kept the original intake and sent it with me. I've always had it in the back of my mind to mate the original air box with the K&N intake hose. Fairly recently I've seen people post about it. I had some time last night and finally decided to give it a go.

    How it started.

I took the cone filter out and test fit to make sure everything was the same diameter and that things would fit together without an issue.

Removed all the stuff that was involved with the K&N kit.

Next was putting the air box back in and test fitting things. Just by eyeing it, I knew I was going to need to do some modifying of the tube. As it turns out, the MAF sensor location is perfectly placed such that I couldn't just cut a length off the end of the intake tube. That had me a little bummed.

So, I did what any ill-advised shade tree mechanic would do and I got out the back and forthy saw and removed 4" from the only place I could.

Jerry rigged a cap for the MAF sensor port in the tube. I decided to use the Toyota MAF mounting spot because I hold the belief that these Toyota engineers had a pretty good idea what they were doing when designing these Tundras (except the LBJs. They REALLY screwed up the LBJs).

Picked up a 3.5" coupler, threw everything together, started it up and took it for a spin around the block.

Honestly, it was a really easy job. The K&N intake didn't add to any sound when idling or grandma driving, but it did have a good sound when you stepped on it. With the stock air box, the growl I'd get is probably 80-90% gone. I know it didn't give any performance gain, but I still appreciated the sound. That's pretty much gone now. I guess having the piece of mind of the better filter and no more oiled up MAF sensors feels good. I'm already starting to get an itch for a Spintech Pro Street 6000 to get a good sound back.
