If you wait a day, it will probably read correctly. Takes some time for the full 2 gallons to make it to the pan.

It's been a couple weeks since I changed the Tundra oil, just checked it again this morning while typing that post. I'll keep an extra 1/2 quart on hand now.

Haven't done my first oil change yet, but 8.5 quarts?? That is a LOT of oil.

And that is absolutely a good thing in terms of engine longevity and protection. I grew up in the 80's and most V8s took 4 quarts of oil. My 500+hp 428ci V8 used 4 quarts of 10-40 Castrol GTX. That was the pinnacle of oil technology in 1987.

Installing an oil pan from Moroso with a 6 qt capacity was considered a high-end modification.

And now, 36 years later, my pickup with a 380hp 350ci V8 comes with an 8.5 quart pan? That is awesome.

Whatever this forum told me to do

and...I've done a handful of lab tests on the oil...and this engine is very easy on oil.

my Kirklands 0w-20, after 5k miles still had a 4.7 tbn. meaning it still safely had 3k miles left on it.

I agree. Now if only the oil companies would start selling 8 or 9 quart jugs. I always buy 2 5 quart jugs and end up with 1.5 to 2 quarts left over. I might add 1/2 quart between changes.

Agreed. They should be 4 qt jugs.
My wife's car takes 6 qts. That means I have to buy a 5 qt jug and then a single qt which costs almost half as much as the 5 qt jug.
Luckily her car uses the same oil, so I can get (3) 5 qt jugs and have exactly enough for both vehicles.

Recently did my first oil change. Previous owner always used Toyota brand, so I did as well. Dealership gave me a box of 8 1-qt bottles :annoyed:Surely they should have larger jugs. Feels wasteful and silly. Their service depts must go through thousands of those tiny bottles.

They use those 300 gallon oil tanks and set their fill gun to the right amount.

I used 7.9 quarts of 0W-20 (with filter change) and it hits the top mark. I just memorized "8 quarts with filter replacement). 8 quarts is the maximum I would use for my truck.

This is what I do after making sure that the truck is parked on a flat spot (no incline to the sides and front and back). I start the engine for a few minutes before reinstalling the skid plate, while making sure that there aren't oil leaks around the filter housing and drain plug. Then I turn the engine off, remove both the dipstick and the and the oil port on top of the engine. The next step is to reinstall the skid plate (should take a few short minutes), and let the truck sit for about 10 or more minutes. Then I check the oil level.

The only time I ever noticed a problem with the oil level was when the truck was parked on uneven ground, including a shallow hole under one of more of the tire, and as mentioned above.

I only use Toyota oil cartridge, since they aren't expensive at all, fit the housing perfectly, and do a good job. I just make sure that the filter housing has a perforated aluminum tube in the middle.
