Went to the carwash and the guy says something is hanging under my truck. This air dam or whatever is dragging the ground. Only two bolts holding it, both a few turns from falling out.

My truck was just in last week for the gas tank fill recall. Would they have removed this for the recall? Does this piece ever get removed for any reason (oil change, etc)?

    Thanks.

It's somewhat of a skid plate. To protect around the oil pan and filter. I took mine off trying to find a bolt that fell and got trapped. I'm not 100%,. but pretty confident that is what this is.

I also think it needs 4 bolts? It's been a while.

Removed for oil and filter changes.
4 bolts that the tech didn’t torque correctly on last change.

That looks like the stock plastic skid plate, where did it come off from?

look at 31.13 sec. My mechanic retired after many yrs. Really miss him we use to both look under the truck when had it on the lift and he did the oil changes and i would help him with the skid plate. Now i'll have to crawl under the truck after the magic happens at the Toyota dealership to make sure it's all put back together.

    Nitrogen filled tires!
another reason to never let the dealer touch your truck. Oil changes are easy. Unfortunately, it looks like the dealer is too busy pushing work out and not checking quality of workmanship. Hope they take care of you and make it right.

Update. Went to the dealer today. They reattached the plate and then said all the clips attaching the air dam are broken, but it was caused by an obvious accident?? There is not a scratch on my truck, never hit anything, never been hit. When the air dam retracted, it actually folded the plate over. I'm thinking this stress on the air dam attachments is what caused the clips to break. Gotta love those dealers. The service language might as well have been written by an attorney. Called corporate Toyota and they are assigning a mediator. Pretty sure the dealer will be picking up the tab on this one. The service technician and the service manager both were saying that the air dam hit a curb while parking. Neither of them realized the air dam does not deploy until getting up in speed. Can't stand dealing with incompetent people. After they fix my truck I will never go back to this dealership.

My guess is the tech was a newbie, and he didn't realize the active air dam should be lowered before doing an oil change. You can remove the skid without lowering the air dam, but it requires prying the air dam down to remove the front 2 bolts. I'm betting that is what caused the damage to the air dam.

Did the car wash have rocker or under carriage wash nozzles? It could have been a combination of the bolts not being tight enough and the water pressure was strong enough to knock it loose. The damage they probably saw was from dragging the plastic piece, or completely made up as previously said.
