This morning as I pulled into a gas station I noticed my 23 Platinum non hybrid was knocking in synch with the regular engine noise. No warning lights or other indications of anything wrong, but it's distinctly different than anything I heard come from the engine after 45k miles.

She garage bound in an hour, but anyone have experience with this?

Sometimes the engine knocks as part of CEL. Mine did that when the rats ate through my knock sensor harness. It made sure I took it in to be checked out.

Not one single person is gonna mention the engine recall situation as OPs likely possibility?? OP is unaware that the recall is a thing??

IF this is bearing failure, would this be the first time without a dashboard lit up like Christmas?

Took a ride with the Toyota mechanic and he said they'll be "calling Toyota to let them know they have another one". The knocking got worse during the brief drive to the dealership so I may have gotten there in the nick of time.

The diagnostics are scheduled for tomorrow so we shall see...

I can't speak for others, but I love my 3rd gen. Wouldn't trade it for an earlier model. Some vehicles may have more issues than others, but at least Toyota is fixing them correctly. That's alot more than anyone can say for other manufacturers. I'm not a Toyota fanboy, but I came from Ford, so anything is better that their recall fiasco.
OP, keep us posted on your truck & hope for a speedy fix.

    Update.....

Dealer confirmed the truck needs a new engine and called Toyota. Toyota is replacing the engine and providing a loaner on their dime. It's too early to get excited yet, but it looks like Toyota plans to take care of me again like they did when they found a dime sized hole in my 8 year old Gen2 Tacoma.

    We shall see...

So, are you within recall window or are you expecting a short block?

I guess in the end it doesn't really matter as long as they fix it.
