Whats the purpose of a double cab?

There was a time when we would rough camp, tent, remote area, no civilization. We moved to tent camping in a campground. Still sleeping on the ground but had public bathrooms and showers. Got a pop up, nice, AC and heat. Almost real beds off of the ground. Then we moved to rentals, houses in areas we wanted to be.
No regrets, wouldn't change any of it.
Won't go back to sleeping on the ground without climate control again either.

I actually have the converse question whenever I see a crew cab with a 5.5 bed that isn’t actually carrying a crew: “why did they buy a pick-up?”

 

Lol carrying people dogs gear bikes and camping gear the possibilities are endless

 

i went to buy a 2025 Tundra DblCab
Upon opening the back door i notice they shortened the space/area of the back and i went CC

I barely fit my gear in the pre-22 DblCab and there was no way that the new DblCab had enough room(disgusting).

Love the CC with a 6.5 Bed but miss the 8 foot Bed = it was a trade-off

 

There is probably some truth to this but I'm only interested in a DC. I just searched again and there are 13 dealers within 100 miles of my location and only 1 DC that is for sale, and that one is in the build phase. If I wanted a CC there's 100's of choices in my area closer that 50 miles

 

lol. Yes, the POSSIBILITIES are endless. People actually carrying out those possibilities are few and far between (at least what I’ve seen in Virginia).

 

Curious. Do you utilize 100% of the volume and payload of the 6.5ft bed of your double cab, 100% of the time you drive it?

 

As you know, it is all about utilization when you need it.

If you do not have the capacity, whether Cab or Bed, then you wish you had it when you need it.

It all comes down to which 'utilization' is most important/necessary to the individual owner.

Yup. People have families with little short people, thus there is a demand for multi purpose vehicles. Conversely, I am sure there are other grumpy old men like me that would prefer a pickup truck with a regular cab and eight foot bed. Unfortunately, we are outnumbered. The manufacturers are going to provide what sells. I buy a pickup truck for what I can put in the back, not the front. A Crew cab(school bus) with a 5.5 foot bed is useless, to me. Obviously others have an interest in them.

 

It can also prove my point, you can't sell me what you don't build or only build in very limited numbers. I've had 3 DC Tundras, 2003, 2010, and 2019, I've test drove CC's and I just don't like them. My point being since Toyota doesn't make what I really want, a regular cab with a 6.5' bed and my second choice the DC's are almost impossible to find I'm currently looking at Fords. As a life long Toyota guy it feels dirty just looking at Fords but I'm not buying a CC, that's for sure.

 

obviously. My post was more directed at the insinuation that CrewMax owners as a whole not only fail to utilize the cab space all the time, but are also eternally flaccid due to the marginally less convenient smaller bed size.

As has been repeated ad nauseam, there isn't really much that a 6.5' bed holds that a 5.5' bed cant, for 98% percent of owners.

 

I do, yes. It is not my daily. I use it as a bike hauler.

 

So technically, "no" but you would fall in the 2% of owners as mentioned previously.

 

'Real world' is not always a smart world......as we see in the major FAIL of all truck manufacturers in the past 5 years.

Technically, 6.5 is a BIG difference from the stubby 5.5

5.5 is a BIG shoebox = ad nauseum

 

A shoebox is a great place to put shoes.

Also, continuing your logic, a V8 >> V6 regardless. Toyota has recently demonstrated that that logic is flawed (despite a few hiccups).

 

I love the back and forth about why each cab configuration is better than the one they didn't buy. And that their chosen configuration is better because, well it is for them. It's so short sighted to think that what works best for you is what everyone else wants and or needs. Grow the f up.

I am from the 70's/80's era where you made friends thru banter/nick names/drag races/sometimes heated

My friends all drive CC/5.5 Bed = as i said in my previous posts, it is all about personal preferences which is neutral and equal to everyone on here
They all tried to convince me that i could live with the 5.5 but KNEW i could'nt/would'nt/should'nt

i am serious about taking a Chevy 2500 6'10" Bed and adapting it to my RAM with the Chevy bumper.

Have to look under both trucks and take pics and then sit down and explore the challenges and costs

If extra money comes my way and it looks do-able, i will assemble the 'prefect' CC - lol

 

So I've got a friend who's got a 2008 Dbl Cab 6.5' bed, and his Dad has a 2023 Dbl Cab 6.5' bed. The difference in back seat room is very significant. Large grown men can sit comfortably in the 2008 backseat. Double amputees, and toddlers are about all that will fit comfortably in the 2023 backseat.

I find it ironic that based on this thread, those who father children aren't manly men (because they buy a crewmax to haul those kids around), but those with no kids and no woman (who buy a single/double cab with an 8'bed) are the only "real men".

 

Seeing how I just got into another discussion about the use and definition of the word real that spiraled into absolute debauchery, I'll keep it short. Your opinion of what real is, isn't real. It's a personal bias.

Note: Perception can be very powerful.
Some of us are older and grew up with 8ft beds standard cabs.
When the extra cab era began it was GREAT and even GREATER with the DblCab and now CC(my current truck)

Real men drive whatever they like best = as long as it is 4WD (LOL)

I’m down to two (down from 5) so I currently own over 16’ of bed haha used to be (4)8’ and (1)6’. We don’t do real work anymore

Gen 3 DC/CM 6.5' bed dimensions 77.6" x 58.7" x 20.9" or 95,202 cu inches of bed space.
