    Well Crap!!!
We get Possums in the backyard on a somewhat regular basis.
If we dont catch em in time my Boxers will kill them.
While I dont have any love for Possums in this case things are a bit different than normal.
We realized the Dogs were after something so we brought them in the house we figured it was another Possum which it was.
It,like Possums do played Possum. We used the normal plan of leaving it alone thinking it would leave like they usually do.
Went back and checked a bit later and like always it was gone.
Only to find several Baby Possums not much bigger than your thumb lying in the mud, still pink and hairless.
We've had a lot of rain this spring.
While I hunt I have a soft spot for the little ones no matter the species.
Dont know what to do with them at this point other than to keep the Dogs inside and hope Momma comes back for them.
    Damn Nature can be cruel!!

Call animal control to trap them and relocate them.

Opossum mothers carry and nurse their young in a pouch for several weeks, then transport them on their back as they forage for food, eventually becoming independent at around four months old.

They may not stand much of a chance without her.

That doesnt really work with the newborns.
We've talked to animal control and they say to keep the dogs inside and Momma will comeback for them.
I guess we'll see in the morning.

    Yeah...I know.
Makes ya want to help them but again animal control says it's best to leave them because Mama will come back for them.
And since the Dogs didnt kill Momma there's a good chance she will.

My Boxers have a serious hunting bone...
We have a weekend place in the Texas Hill Country on the South Llano river thats way out in the boonies...
We let the dogs out in the morning to do their business and several times we've gone out to find a deer carcass on the porch.
Hell,we watched our Male Boxer Jack Dempsey swim back across the river with a Goat in his jaws.
Yeah..had to pay the rancher across the river for that one.
On the plus side we got to make some Cabrito that weekend.

My boxer was constantly trying to grab a deer or squirrel. Came close a lot. Miss that clown.

Yeah...Boxers are the clowns of the Dog world.
It's sometimes hard to believe the Germans used them as War Dogs as well as Police Dogs.
Watched a video of several Boxers jumping into the back of a cargo plane with the ramp being a good five foot off the ground.
    And they did it effortlessly.

Those possums will hurt those dogs if they get a hold of them. They do carry some nasty bugs.

The only issue is if your Dogs aren't vaccinated.
It depends on where you live as to the vaccinations your Dogs receive.
We always made certain our Pups were vaccinated for the bugs they could possibly be exposed to.

It really is crazy seeing how goofy they are. It’s been three years since we put mine down and I got told, very bluntly, that we are getting not one but two boxers this year and my daughter and wife already have the names picked out.

about 6 years ago my sister nursed a baby possum back to health when its mother got run over by a car. It ended up being a tame free range pet at her house. They aren’t the prettiest looking of god’s creatures, but the little critter (which became a large critter) was pretty darn endearing. The hair was super soft and he loved being petted and snuggling up indside the sleeve of my jacket (while i was wearing it). We would take him out at night and flip over large rocks so that he could eat all the insects. He loved crunching down on large beetles. Eventually the possum quit hanging around and didn’t ever come back. Perhaps he found an attractive lady possum?

Not telling the OP what to do, but i enjoyed the short time of experiencing another peculiar animal in the rural area that i live.

Giardia is a common one the possums pass to dogs, which they will get over but only after lots of diarrhea and antibiotics. :poking:
