Well, I've had this truck for several months now, and I can honestly say that I wish I bought it new back in 2014, because I simply love the ride, the power and the usability of the vehicle. I've had Toyota vehicles since 1993, when I bought my SR5 Toyota Hilux, which I still drive daily, and my 03 Sequoia, which just retired due to a rotted frame. All of my trucks have been good to us, and it seems after just a few months, this one will be one of my personal favorites.

Coming from a background working as a local grease monkey, turned carpenter, turned small biz guy, having a reliable vehicle is one of my pet peeves, as it seems as though almost every single time I bring my vehicle to a recommended "shop", it comes back to me, either not fixed, half ass fixed, or needing to be refixed. So over the last 40 years I've continued my practice of simply fixing it myself, because I just don't seem to have the luck of being able to trust anyone else out there to do the job right, regardless of how much I pay them.

So the newest vehicle I own is a 2007 commercial truck for my biz, and everything else, just like myself, is old, a little worn down, but runs fine, except for my diesel dodge that I simply haven't had the time to get to fix, but that's for another time.

Here is my First Toyota, and although today, she's a bit more rusty, still serving me well.

And here is the new Toy in it's glory

A few months ago, I decided to do some maintenance on the new Tundra. First thing first was to do the front axle boots, as the reason this truck went to the dealer, is the PO had bought a new truck, and I can only assume he knew that his CV Boot was shot. I've pulled plenty of CV axles out of vehicles in the past, but the one on the passenger side of this truck was, by far, the most difficult one I've ever had to remove. The small clip on the internal end of the shaft, that went into the axle tube, just didn't want to come out. Eventually I rented a large slide hammer, and it finally broke loose. Cleaned out the joints, installed new toyota boots, grease, clamps, rotors, and pads, and did some rust cleaning of the frame, and I was up and running after weeks of this new truck sitting in my driveway, not going anywhere. Driving with a broken CV boot wasn't gonna happen, and now I could drive her around.

    Then the axle

    Next was an AF change
    Oil Change
    Air Filter
    Sparkies

All fun stuff to do on the new ride.

Everything looked good, and maintained so far, even with the 100K on the ticker

So being on the road, and in a new "computerized vehicle" I've never owned previously, I get this "maintenance required" on the dash pop up every time I take it for a ride. I attached my simple scan tool, and I get this error code P2714. Again, being the newest vehicle I own, I really don't know how to address this, other than doing a internet search, and looking through the Hanes Manual I bought when I got the truck.

    p2714.jpg

This code tells you a bunch of things, but nothing specifiic:

Trans fluid could be low, or high
    Trans fluid could be dirty
Valve "D" could be bad in the trans
    Bad wiring

One fella stated that the Output shaft sensor can cause a P2714 code, so I ordered one, and replaced it with new even though it tested fine. That didn't work, so step two followed:

I figured the first thing I'd do is do a trans service. Drained the fluid, as per the videos I watched, and figured that this was a lot to come out of a trans, when the vids I watched averaged 4 quarts, even with the trans cooler thermostat pinned opened.

    T fluid.jpg

Easier said than done. The trans's twelve bolts were not going to be a fun time, as two were already broken off

    T bolts.jpg

I tried the weld a nut trick, but failed

    T weld.jpg

Wound up drilling out the snapped bolts, and luckily was able to save the rest

    T bolts drilled.jpg

The fluid, the pan, the filter (strainer) were all perfectly clean. Almost zero material in the pan, and what was in there was a mere dusting. After replacing the filter and gasket, and filling with 8 quarts of Toyota Trans fluid, I did the flush process that I watched here:2018 Toyota Tundra Transmission Filter Change And Flush

I did the fill level procedure where it the trans gets to temp, then drain to dribble, and called it a day. I purchased a fill pump kit that made life easy peasy filling the unit up, and well worth the investment.

Then the unexpected: A new code appeared (0717) which said the input speed sensor was bad on the trans.

    t code P0717.jpg

Since I had the original "good" sensor from the rear of the trans I had swapped out initially, I installed it back into the truck, except into the front input speed sensor port, and that new P0717 code went away.

I'm currently still having the P2714 code displayed in the code reader, in the "permanent codes" file, but the truck seems to perform flawlessly otherwise. No funky shifting, no banging, and drives beautifully.

    The learning process continues.

The “maintenance required” popup is on a mileage timer for oil changes and just needs to be reset after oil changes. Did you have a CEL to go with your scanned code? If not, then that could have been a stored or “permanent code” from prior that had been reset. Also, as you have already discovered so it’s too late, most will not drop the trans pan for a fluid exchange, only for solenoid replacement. The “filter” in their never really needs to be changed as it’s more of a screen for chunks and I’ve never seen a member shown us a “dirty” one.

The cel only came on when the p0717 code arrives, otherwise no. That cel check engine lmp went away as soon as the input speed sensor was changed, and that traction control msg disappeared simultaneously

The permanent code doesnt seem to be going away, anytime soon, but the vids i watched says it can take a while once you fix whatever it is thats causing the issue.

If I have to guess, at some point, Ill be ordering Solenoid "D" and dropping the pan again. At least this time, I wont have the 6 hours lying on my back digging out and retapping threads

The reminder screens are for you to set your own. The maintenance message comes on when the computer sees the mileage interval has passed. A quick search revealed
