I bought a 2000 Tundra 4WD at an auction and when I start it, there is a weird noise coming from the center console that will continue even when you turn it off and take the key out. It almost sounds like it's a tape deck or a cd looking for something to load (it does have both and I haven't put anything in it yet) is this normal? Why is it making this noise?

What aftermarket accessories are inside your center console? Any wiring running to it? Really, there shouldn't be anything in there. Pics might help.

Edit: You have a tape deck and CD player in your center console? Maybe one of them really is acting like it's trying to load something. Pull the fuse and see if it stops :notsure:

Well I just picked it up today from the place I got it from. I may have misspoke about center console...it's in the center of the dash. I don't know if this is aftermarket or not[IMG]

The sound is coming from somewhere around this...and it continues for a few minutes even after you turn the key off

Yeah, that's a factory setup. Nothing electric is behind that as the HVAC is all mechanical so it's either the headhunt or something aftermarket behind it. Pull the audio unit fuse and see if the noise stops.Screen Shot 2025-03-29 at 5.08.35 PM.png

That’s a super cool original piece, I would definitely recommend keeping it even if ya get another head unit. Could be the oem cd is trying to load from the changer or switching between sources, that could make odd sound. I’m not sure about tundra, but 4Runner factory radios left a lot on the table that a HU and speaker upgrade was always needed.
