This is interesting. I have looked into that as well. I live and work between Norther Alberta & Manitoba, Canada and have not experienced anything yet. Has anyone had this happen on their TUNDRA?

Hmm, first of all, in the winter mine looks like the photo in the first post, nearly all oil. Secondly, it's mounted right up near the radiator which is a pretty decent heat source. Lastly it is machined out of aluminum which heats really quickly and warm crankcase air is being pulled straight through it during operation. So, I think chances are pretty damn slim, just my .02!

I just talked with J&L in Virginia and they said they have not had any freeze up issues reported. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened but at least this hasn't been a constant complaint back to the manufacturer. They are great to talk to if anyone is thinking about getting one and want's more clarification.

Like I said, not an expert. Also, everyones definition of winter is different, and we often have several weeks in a row of -30 to -35 deg weather at which point batteries, furnaces, cars and many other things develope issues that are non existant in other climates.

There are countless posts on this if you google it, so maybe this is why vehicles in north america do not come with oil separators from factory.

Am I wrong, or isn’t the vapor with oil from the pvc valve going into the intake to get purged anyway? So you lose it whether you have a can or not?

Whatever this forum told me to do
the Toyota pcv system puts in back into the system. as do all modern pcv systems.

i see your point....it's mostly water vapor.

but any oil that gets in the catch can.....uh....does not go back in the system.

Thanks for the info. I thought it just got burned up through the engine. Makes sense. Don’t think I’ll do this upgrade.

German cars use a better tool instead of a mere PVC - Oil/Water separators.

Oil separators capture unwanted "blowby" vapors.

Has absolutely nothing to do with oil loss, LOL, but does help with carbon buildup and detonation issues among other things. These need to be self serviced, hence the reason most car manufacturers don't have them standard. Most people never lift their hood. Takes me a couple seconds or so to check mine.

I live in Montana, we can go days or even a week below 0 temps and hit -50 with windchill where I am specifically. I haven't had issue with the catch can freezing or hose freezing. I will note its very, very dry here so that probably plays into it. But I would think if you have that much of a condensation issue it would cause other problems as well.

Better is relative. If the oil is getting separated, how much better do you need?

When it gets cold enough to freeze water in the engine bay, any water is going to be settled to the bottom of the can so even if it did freeze, it wouldn't affect the function of or clog the system. Simply clean it out every 1000 miles and that's it.
