Whats the purpose of a double cab?

A truck should be a truck, that includes a bed 6.5-8 feet long. It can get damaged, scratched up etc...and it shouldn't bother you, because things that work get dirty and damaged eventually. Most the people here should drive a camry and just want to look cool in a truck. It's blatantly obvious with the comments, photos and threads on this forum, especially in the newer gen. But you all don't want to really hear that.

 

It's only upsetting because it wasn't even paid off yet.

 

I hate the double cab. It's not comfortable for people to ride back there.

That said, I make 20 trips to home depot and utilize the longer bed for every one time I need to drive people back there so I wouldn't trade for a short bed.

 

Meh. The "trips to Lowes" justification is laughable. There's an extra 1 foot of bed length from a standard CrewMax to a Double Cab. Both the CM and the DC have to lower the tailgate "to fit plywood brah" and both have to secure those loads. If I need anymore bed space than what "plywood" is going to occupy, it's trailer time anyway.

If you sleep in the bed as a minimalist camper, then the DC has the advantage, other than that - unless you're ripping the 8 footer, just stop. It's stale.

 

For me, many times I’ve been able to fit 8’ lengths of wood/trim etc diagonally in the back of my 6.5’ bed and been able to close the cap/tailgate and thought I was happy to not have a smaller bed for that reason. It doesn’t matter if it’s raining, windy etc. I don’t have to worry about losing the load or getting it wet, or driving around with the cap or tailgate hanging open. Sometimes an 8’ would be nice but it wouldn’t fit in my garage or be fun to park! As mentioned though, I agree it’s dumb to try and argue about when everyone has a different use case.

I went with the Crewmax L for this exact reason. The Tundra wasn't on my list after using a short bed Crewmax in the past a 5.5' bed is just too small.
I've been in the backseat of the 3rd gen Doublecab and I'm surprised they even brought it to market thats how small the rear seat is.

I don't haul people in my double cab. It's 99% me. I can think of two occasions someone was back there. I like my bed.

 

My 1st gen I had an AC & longer bed. I was doing more "truck stuff" then, hauling, truck camping sometimes, I bought a "fixer upper" house so lots of dump runs, hauling materials, etc.

The back seat was all but useless. The longer bed made sense but there were times I'd have like more people room.

Now I'm 62, the fixer upper is as "finished" as a '50's built house can be, and when it needs something done I'd rather pay someone who won't need chiropractic work when the job is done.

I have a very comfortable RV so I don't need or want to sleep in my truck anymore.

I haven't needed to haul anything since buying the CM 2 1/2 years ago that I haven't been able to fit in the bed or on the racks, and if I do I can borrow my neighbor's 2500 longbed or spring for the $20 Home Depot truck rental.
Yes, sometimes I might need to play Tetris when packing a load to fit everything instead of just tossing it in there willy-nilly. No big whoop, I'm pretty good at spatial relations.

I don't often haul a lot of passengers, but when I do I like for them to be comfortable. I keep bottled water and snacks in the door pockets and can put Netflix or YouTube on the big ass Kenwood for their viewing pleasure.

We DO haul the 3-dog pack with us often and want them to be comfortable too. Sadie likes to stretch out on the seat while Diego always has his front feet on the center console keeping a vigilant eye on the road ahead, and Quincy will be in Mom's lap in front.

I mostly just haul surfboards now, and I can fit all but my one longest board in the bed under the tonneau. 7' 2" board in a boardbag corner to corner.
On cold winter mornings when I go surfing it's much warmer and easier to change into my wetsuit in the giant backseat instead of hopping around outside.

If a DC works best for your lifestyle, cool... I hope that's what you have.

If a CM makes more sense, awesome. I hope THAT's what you have.

If you're rockin' a RCLB... I don't get it, but rock on!

I will say I have noticed SOME of the angry DC guys impugning the manhood or questioning the work ethic of those who like the CM, saying we should all just drive Camry's to the mall...
I didn't understand at first why they were so bothered, but it finally dawned on me.

Straight up jealous about the whole roll down back window thing. I get it, it's pretty sweet, but you guys can't let it eat at ya' so much, it ain't healthy.

Before, a longer bed made more sense so that's what I owned.

Now, I don't need that as much and a cavernous limo back seat makes me happy so that's what I bought.

If anyone has a problem with that, you can suck it.

The question "what can a car do that a truck can't" is kinda hard to answer
The question "what can a truck do that a car can't" has a ton of answers.
That being said, I look cool in a damn Corolla too. Just sayin

 

You might look cool despite being in a Corolla, but trust me, you aren’t looking cool because you’re in a Corolla.

 

while the core of owning a truck is for its capability to do hard work not everyone is a farmer , construction worker, delivery or tradesman's of some sort. There is validity in saying many who purchase trucks do so just because they think they are "cool". However, there are just as many who buy them for their sheer versatility, which a car often lacks.
Keeping a truck clean, in good shape, and taking pride in ownership does not equate to - you should own a car.

Is there a specific version or trim level of the Camry I should get?

Can I still go camping if I get a 6.5-8 foot bed after I sell my lil' 5.5' bed CM?

Need more guidance please 'cuz I dunno' how the Camry is gonna get all our stuff out here. (But I bought a CM so what do I know?)

 

My 2007 standard bed/DC was great, though rarely had passengers for more than 10 minutes in the beginning. When looking for the replacement I tried to look at DC's to save money, but that just wasn't going to happen with a family. That "save money" thought became irrelevant when my wife helped talk me into a Platinum. No regrets. So far I haven't needed to haul anything that I would need the standard bed for.

Now if I didn't need to use the Tundra as a part-time family vehicle, and used it only for "truck things" in town, then I suppose I would've been fine with a DC with a standard bed and less comforts.

 

Anyone who played hockey or has hockey playing kids will understand this -

It is worth it to own a truck, just to have a place to carry hockey bags that will not stink up your entire car. They nasty.


I have a crew max and a short bed. I have 3 kids, or else I would’ve gone Taco.

I do haul wood from time to time depending on what projects I am doing around the house. I also take recycling to the dump.

I’m just your modern day basic bitch truck driver.

(I think the 3rd gens with 6.5ft beds look great, by the way)

 

I like the looks of the double cab over the crew. They seem better proportioned to my eye. When I bought my Tundra, I didn't even know they made a double cab or I might have migrated towards them instead of the crew. My kids are grown so we don't need as much room behind the front seats anymore and a 6.5 bed would be nice. Especially for camping in the bed under a camper shell. 5.5' is just a little short for me to stretch out.

If it doesn't have an 8' bed it's not a pickup, it's a grocery getter! I have to laugh pretty much any time you're at Home Depot and some guy is jamming 2x4" through his back window, or they're hanging so far over his tailgate he has to strap the front down. I use my truck as a truck, you know to do truck things: like haul lumber, or plywood, or large furniture, or firewood, or motorcycles, ALL with the tailgate up and latched. Plus all our kids are grown with families of their own and the only passengers in the back seat are our 25lb Labradoodles.

Still driving my F-150 but was ready to buy a Tundra 6 months ago until this engine mess started. Will be buying one soon. Funny thing is Toyota is the ONLY manufacturer that offers a 4 door 8' bed 1/2T now. Only F-150 w/ an 8' bed is a regular cab XL???

Plus the 163" wheelbase makes for a very stable towing platform.

I've sold off some of those and added a few that aren't in the picture. I decided that at 62 I didn't need so many shortboards, and I've been having fun riding more mid-lengths.

The latest is a 6' 10" long fish based on a Skip Frye template. Super fun.

I couldn’t agree more. I’m 41 and surf, Mt bike and dirt bike as much as possible. Moving keeps you young. If you stop moving you’re doomed.

 

60 and still skate... vert not so much anymore. slamming isn't what it used to be.

 

62 and still kite surf and snow kite on skis. Sitting around is no good.
