If by cargo you mean the bike I'll post a picture this weekend. If I float I'll post of a pic of it with the canoe too. The rack is mounted on the rails so it doesn't take up any bed square footage.

 

As promised... Bike. I removed the rear third crossbar because it was a PITA to get the bike in and out with it on. We sometimes do some canoe/kayak trips so I'll reserve the third bar for kayaks and then just use the two over the cab for canoes.

 

We are able to carry the bikes like that with the shell on. We put the back tire in and just roll them in as we close the tailgate. It works pretty good.

 

An update, I hate the rack and am getting rid of it. Way too much noise from the wind.

 

Did you say what you plan to carry? Noise is huge for me so aero bars were a requirement.

 

The shell hung from the rack for 24 hours. It worked fine.

 

I don't think I did. Canoes and Kayaks. I have a Disco 169 so something like that and maybe a Wally World special kayak or two.

My Inno bars have a wind break in front that omits wind noise. Maybe other cross bars have similar options.

If I wasn't already pulling a trailer I would just build up a little PWC trailer. The polaris personal water craft from the 90's were particularly prone for being junk. There has to be tons of little trailers around that can handle 300-400 pounds. It would make life way easier if you can go that route. There is no way I would do a roof setup if there was another option. My boat weighs 75-80#s and is 12ft. A 9ft boat that weighed 40#s would be a different story.

I bet a lot of your whistle is coming from the bars not having the inserts. I bet if you sealed them up it would help. I have the same rack with the aero bars. I did not notice a noise change on the highway.

yeah. I like legendary trucks and legendary travel trailers.

 

I have no personal experience but have read to wrap a couple of bungy cords around the rails and the noise drops dramatically. Something about breaking up the way the air travels in and around the rails...

Seems crazy but I’ll give it a shot on my C30; though the noise isn’t bad.

Probably won’t help but it may be worth a shot.

 

I tried taping up all the openings, still whistles. I cut some foam pipe insulation and taped it to the leading outside edges and it helped some. I made a cardboard fairing & that helped a lot, but I haven't fabricated a real one yet and the pre-made ones are way too expensive. Easy to take the bars off when not in use.

 

Exactly. My bars are for carrying boats. When I am not doing that I take them off. 4 minutes at the most to take them off.

 

Did you ever figure out a solution that works for occasional canoe carrying and still allows for easy, over the tailgate bike transport? Right now I'm considering one ladder support placed about mid-bed and one set of Q-tower-type roof rail, similar to this pic:

 

No I sure haven't. I will probably bite the bullet and get one of the adjustable height Thule/Yakima bed mounted ones

We’ve used the same set of clips on 3 different vehicles for my BIL. We just bend the metal clip part into the shape the new truck needs in a vise (makeshift metal brake). Add some thin foam tape to the surface of the clip that touches the truck and tighten them on. So I think you can modify the clips if needed.

 

Hmmm, you mean just buy whatever number and bend it to fit?

 

I'm not a fan of the Yak Q Towers. I would consider the Yak "Landing Pad" a much better product. It costs more, takes more time to initially install, but everything about them is superior.

 

Well I got already the bars and the Q towers Only need the right clips. Maybe later if I see these are not enough I'll consider a different setup.

 

Reviving this thread because when you search the web for 1st get tundra cross bars / roof rack, ect... this is the most common forum thread that displays.
I purchased this set of cross bars for my wife's car to haul our Thule rooftop carrier when we travel. For the majority of it's life, the Thule lives in the corner of the garage. These roof rails also live in that corner as Mrs. Mamba doesn't like those "ugly" bars diminishing the valve of her "pretty" car when not in use.
While cleaning out and organizing, I thought I'd see if they were compatible and what they look like on the FGT. This is a "universal" "fits most" application. I ended up using the #1 mounts that came with the kit. Mrs. Mamba's car uses mount #4. I had to modify the bracket a bit by changing the mounting angle, but was able to get them to fit securely and snugly to the roof. They are not going to move or come loose. For a kit that was just going to sit in the garage for most of its life, I'm pleased with the look. This isn't something that I would have purchased on it's own for my truck, but It's at least an option for those looking for something.
