Just dropping in to say thank you to BubbaW, Nick, and Shifty for all the details in this thread! Looks like I'll be able to order the LBJ kit, new retainer nuts, and bolts (04006-62134, 90171-18003, & 90105-12316) for my 05 DC from Ourisman Toyota delivered for about $226. Can't complain about that, although it's a bummer I had to wait on a paycheck and couldn't get the 15% off they were running last week lol

Man I'll let you know as I'm just ordering them in the next day or two after some final checks.

My old 07 Honda Pilot decided to break down and it needed some suspension love. Ended up rebuilding the front end on it and had to wait on a couple of paychecks before I could afford to order the Tundra parts.

@Khunter0211 Thought I'd throw this out there for anyone of us with a late 2004 or 2005-2006 trucks. From other posts/threads in this forum I was able to find the name of the safety recall the double cab LBJs were covered under.

Toyota Safety Recall 70B (Think it was a post from shifty back in 2021 on another LBJ thread):

    Link to Recall Doc:
    https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2007/RCRIT-07V013-5417.pdf

From Page 2, section 4: "Number and Identification of Involved Vehicles"
    upload_2025-3-18_11-7-23.png

    2005 Specific Range:
    upload_2025-3-18_10-58-6.png

    TOYOTA VIN NUMBER BREAKDOWN:
    DIGIT 1 = COUNTRY
    DIGIT 2 = MANUFACTURER
    DIGIT 3 = DIVISION
    DIGITS 4-8 = VDS
    DIGIT 9 = CHECK
    DIGIT 10 = MODEL YEAR
DIGIT 11-17 = UNIQUE SERIAL NUMBER

My 2005 DC VIN fell into the DT481 VDS and subsequent VIN Range.

Page 4, Section 5 of the safety recall "Parts Ordering" Lists the 04006-62134 Front Lower Ball Joint Kit:

I'm going to make a call to my local parts counter as a last ditch effort to find the cheapest price, but if no luck I'll be ordering from Ourisman in the next couple of hours. If I run into any BS or issues I'll post a follow up here.

Thanks for the this. I had called my local Toyota parts department and they had said my truck had already been recalled and fixed the LBJ back in 07'. I asked about he kit and he gave me the reason why he couldnt order that for me since I already had the recall completed for my truck. He did mention to call around other dealers and I could possibly get the kit if they had them in stock.

Man Ourisman Toyota can't be beat. I called my nearest dealer in Louisville, KY and they wanted $330 for the LBJ kit alone, that did NOT include the 8 bolts and castle nuts. I did find out my truck (I'm 2nd owner) had them replaced back in 2009 at the dealer. I'm doing them again because the driver side is creaking really bad and it's an advanced auto parts version. Less than 10k miles on it and it seems to be failing. No movement when I jack up the truck and put a pry bar under the tire, but it creaks really bad when turning at slow speeds or sitting still. My LCAs are rusted to crap and the bushings are starting to develop some slop. Thinking I need to do the LCAs as well, just don't have the $500 for OEM so might skimp along with the MOOG from RA for now. With my luck my bolts will be seized too so might as well prepare for that. Next item to research is KPO offroad cam eliminator kit or just eat another $240 from 1stgenoffroad and buy the OEM bolt kit there. Seems my front end rebuild is getting pricey and I haven't even gotten my Bilstein 5100s yet lol

I'm not going to argue with this for $226 though:

Agree lol yeah it's parked for now. Between this forum and First Gen Tundra FB group I'm not taking any chances with an LBJ failure.

Part of the reason I had to get my old pilot patched up was I'd have something while the truck sits and I get all the parts together. Was having too much fun driving the Tundra everywhere.

Did you order the kit online or did you have to call Ourisman Toyota? That is a good deal.

Ordered online through their website. Straightforward and no issues whatsoever.

This is my second order from them. When I bought the truck first order of business was all new brakes. Went with OEM drums and shoe kit on the rear (Ourisman was again 50% cheaper than my two closest dealers). Both orders had a label created and tracking number in my inbox within 10 minutes of order and arrived in 3-5 business days.

Hmm, I never got a LBJ recall notice for my 2005, should I have?

I’d say double check your VIN with my post above. I see your profile says regular cab long bed. Maybe Toyota shipped your truck with the latest part number for lower ball joints.

My passenger side that has the OEM LBJ and CV Axle at 197k miles (on a contractors truck that was used daily for 15 years) is still holding up better than the Advanced Auto Parts LBJ after 10-12k miles. The AAP is already creaking when turning the wheel at very slow speeds or stopped. OEM is solid, no noise and no play when prying on the tire while jacked up.

if your current OEM LBJs don’t have any play and are not making noise I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over it. Easier said than done with all the LBJ failure/warning posts lol…

If you were the owner in early 2007 and your VIN # falls in one of the the affected ones, you should have.

It does, and I didn't. Will have to look into this.

    I'm at 91K and seldom venture off-road.

20 yrs and 91K, you barely have gotten out of the driveway
Twas it mine and not much off road, I'd know it was a wear item and simply need to replace sooner or later.
