I'm making a switch from a 3rd gen to a 2nd gen and my question is do the aftermarket 46 gallon tanks work well or do they have issues? I'm seeing a lot of 26 gal Tundra's and don't mind eventually getting an aftermarket tank but if they have known issues I'll plan on trying to get a 38 gal Tundra from the get-go.

I had a transfer flow with no issues. Gas gauge was fairly accurate. Not much else to say. It worked.

Nice thanks for the feedback! I won't worry about the trucks with the smaller tank since there is a viable alternative if I find one at the right price AND I feel like the smaller tank is a big enough hindrance.

I was thinking the same as well. Unfortunately i got 26 gal, but thinking more weight might have lean issues? Wish I can get it its not legal in california so I would have to drive to a shop in AZ?

I mean 46 gal isn't THAT different from 38 gal on the larger tank trucks, if needed I'm sure a custom preload spacer on the left side could be found or made pretty easily.

I actually just measured my truck with a full tank. I've got a 46 in mine. I only measured about a 3/8" difference side to side from the fender lip to the ground. Passenger side was 40 1/4", driver was 39 7/8".

The 46 gallon tank is not legal in CA? I can't think of a single reason (even emissions related) on why it would be illegal.

I am not 100% sure, but it may be because the transfer flow comes with a second evap canister and you need to tie into the OEM canister and lines.

Something I never understood is they are located in Chico, CA, and sell a product not legal to install in CA.

If you find a truck with a 26 gal tank you could always swap in a 38 gallon tank. Not 100% sure on price but I assume it's drastically cheaper than an after market tank and it'll get you half the way to the 46 gal tank. Lots of write ups on people doing the swap around here

This is a lot more common than people realize. Especially with firearms.

That said, I havent been able to wrap around the why either, especially in CA where it cannot be due to labor and land costs...

This is what I wanted to do originally but I never found one reasonably priced enough to deal with the cost. Most I was finding were on craigslist or FB marketplace for $1200+, and junkyards around here seem to know what they have when they get a 38 gallon truck, as the yards I called were asking $1500 or more for the 38's. I got lucky and found my 46 on FB marketplace for $1000. Couldn't say no to that.

I looked at 46, I think it protrudes below the frame => not good for offroading, not at all.

I also got 708 miles out of my 38 gal tank, traveling slowish on a gravel road. Wasn't even dry. That's enough for me.

No shit, that seems pretty steep for a used fuel tank! The OP looks to be on the right track then...

I ran mine through multiple un-named trails in southern Utah in June, and we finished the trip in Moab including Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners, I know I hit it a few times but it sits no lower than the factory tank. Plus it's steel as opposed to the plastic OEM so I'm not terribly worried about hitting it either.

Nothing against you VTL, I just find it funny that the only people opposed to the 46 gallon tanks are the guys who bought trucks with 38's, and I do respect that. These just happen to be, IMO, the best option for those of us stuck with the 26g tanks from factory. It's a size and strength upgrade.

I feel you. Colorado is adopting a lot of CARB level emissions standards. I've got a friend with a Highlander, and another with a Silverado that I'm trying to help them out with catalytic converter issues but the damn CARB legal cats damn near double or triple the Federal emissions cats. I've heard of people skipping the crap and hitting parts stores in Wyoming but I'm also pretty wary of that, not sure what the state would say if they found out you pulled that crap.

I'll probably be ending up with a 8ft bed as those models are way cheaper so I doubt I'll be off-roading besides rough fire roads for hunting that my wife's subaru could go down in all honesty. I have a dual sport motorcycle for any real off-roading.

That's a nice photo, any issue with corrosion?

I have 38gal and still want 46gal tank, jerry cans work, but I still hate it when the spill get onto the clothes and sitting in the car with gasoline smell is not my thing.

None so far, besides what was there when I bought it. I got it second hand, there was one minor rock rash spot that had some surface rust.

Yeah mine stuck down below the frame a little, but it was pretty stout. Their website says it’s made from 12 gauge steel. I know a skid plate is better than a direct hit on the tank, but it would take a pretty big hit to damage it.

If they have no stiffeners inside, on impact it can flex and hit the pump and then rebound back. But plastic tank is even worse in that respect, of course.

alright fellas, please learn from my lessons.

If you have 38 gallon tank, the 46 gallon tanks WILL NOT fit, 38 gallon trucks have different cross members in front of the driveshaft support bearing.

    LOL

This effed up state has not the resources, awareness, expertise nor attention span to do anything about it. I can not imagine how it might even come up.
