    Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum and I did try to search for this information before posting on this forum as well as google it but all information I could find was either about the 4.7L or 5.7L V8 and not the 4.6L.

Anyway, I was hoping to hear from experience from someone that owns or have owned a 4.6L Tundra or Sequoia and has done their own spark plug change.

I'm at the recommended mileage to change them and I do have mechanical and auto work experience and comfortable doing much of my own maintenance. However, Not yet doing anything myself with this motor I was hoping someone could fill me in on it.
How hard was this job? I imagine there will be some things I need to move out of the way other than the air filter box. Is there a particular plug that is harder to get to than others? Is this something that can be successfully done within a reasonable time in the driveway or is this such a pain in the butt that 4.6L owners recommend dealership replacement?

Any help, info or links will be greatly appreciated

    Thanks
    JB

Hmmm... guess no one wanted to answer this. I was wondering the same thing.

Need to change mine and want to start with the hardest first because I don't need to have truck down very long. If I can't get it I can quit until another time.

I had my spark plugs replaced at the dealer a couple of year ago, I had covid at the time and the truck was in the shop getting other things fixed and this is my only vechicle. I am not going to tell you what I paid (to embarrassed) but it was not cheap.

Oh I know. That's why I want to do it myself.

The alternator was a bear. I can imagine what a dealer would have charged me for that too. Upwards of about 600 when all was said and done. I did it for 250.

The 4.6L is based on the 5.7 lots of YouTube videos on the subject the hardest cylinders will be the one’s closest to the firewall

Be sure to use OEM (Denso)

Plugs are way easier than the alternator. Take your time and you’ll be finished in 2 hours max. As stated - the 4.6 is the same design as the 5.7 - everything should be nearly identical.

81500 mi on my 2012 Tundra SR5 DC 4.6L. The dealer quoted me $649 for replacing my spark plugs in Feb 2025. That was $436 for 2 hours labor and $213 for the plugs. Since I was already there spending $785 for ATF change, Differential change, and coolant flush, I told them NO THANKS. Bought the 8 OEM Denso 3421 plugs (90919-01191) for $30 on Ebay and spent 45 minutes checking youtube videos and 3 hours doing the work. Be sure to torque your plugs properly and according to the Car Nut you won't need anti-seize on your threads.

Just letting you know that there are a LOT of counterfeits on Ebay. So if you get funny behavior in, let's say, the next 15,000 miles, remember this post.

This here Tundra board has pretty much concluded: buy plugs either from a Toyota dealer or a manufacturer's authorized seller.

As @TundraMcGov. stated, please don't do this, the $30 plugs will probably be counterfeit even if they don't appear so.

Please don’t buy spark plugs from eBay, Amazon, or Temu.
