O6 SR5 DC Fog Light Add

Read few different threads and seen a lit of good idea information, but wanted to confirm with those who have experience.
My SR5 does not have fog lights. I want them.
At first, its read that the blank switch on the dash was hooked up for the fog lights. Then I read that on my model truck, that blank switch is actually for the rear windshield defroster.
Based on this, I would need to order a new steering column stem which includes a switch for the fog lights, which my current stem does not have.
However, on my center console sole, there appears to be a switch for the rear windshield defroster, so i am not 100% which way to go. Been warm out so haven't had a chance to test it.
The switch to install on the dash is no longer in production, and difficult to source, so I don't want to play the guessing game and waste time that i don't have chasing parts and spending money.
Any information would be appreciated!

You are mistaken.

In the post-2003 trucks, fog light control is on the stalk. You need to update your stalk to have fog light controls. Someone must've swapped your stalk?

The oval button you circled is for the RSCA (side curtain air bag) control.

The button in the center dash you circled is for rear view mirror defrost, I believe? Or rear window. I'm too lazy to look.

I know nobody bothers, but I'm 90% sure reading your Owners Manual - I know, I know, it's a radical concept - would have told you this

Appreciate the input. I suspected I needed a new stalk. Yes, I do actually reference the owners manual all the time, but often times, it mentions things such "for models equipped with..." and honestly, after 20 years and 2 previous owners, I dont know what they did or what it was equipped with. I assumed from what I've read that I was going with the stalk, which is preferable anyway.

 

Definitely need the stalk. Watch out for aftermarket parts. You need to OEM part number? There's a 25% off sale at my go-to dealer, and they do no-tax and free-ship on anything over a certain dollar amount.

You are correct on both counts and OP can verify if mirror heater installed by the 15A MIR HTR fuse and MIR HTR relay in engine bay.

I just added fog lights to my 2006 DC SR5. Yes, I had to change the stalk. There are a TON of used OEM ones on eBay as they are easy to uninstall from a wrecked or rusted one to sell. Don't eff about with a non OEM one.
HOWEVER, you also need the relay. I had purchased the relay for 20 odd bucks, as everything said it was required. Went to install it and turns out the relay was already there. So have a feel behind and make sure the relay is not already there. You want to feel behind the fuse panel that is by the drivers left knee. Three relays on the rear of that at the bottom. Middle one is the one for the foglights. It it is empty, you need to buy one,

for your 06 DC, it's down at bottom middle, n0. 6 in above pic....

Oh, one more thing! You want the Sequoia foglights. The Access /Regular cab ones will click into place, but the rear adjuster part on those is of a smaller diameter, so do not 'fill the hole' that they go into. The Sequoia ones come with a little doohickey that will fill that hole and stop the foglight from flopping up and down.

Interesting. I was looking at getting a set of LED fog lights from trail runner. I'll have to confirm fitment with them before I order anything.

You can look quickly under your truck and see where the fog light will fit into (just need to undo 3 10mm bolts) You'll see the hole at the rear that the adjuster will poke through once installed. You'll see what I mean then.

Ask me how I know! Of course, if I had paid attention to the mega thread, I would have triple checked the fit and not relied on eBay assuring me it would fit. Fortunately, the seller was great and took the return.

However, once you have the 3 parts (relay, lights, switch), it is literally a 20 minute job. Quicker if you're younger and can get up off the ground easily!

 

Well, I'm not "old" but I have a 2 or old boy and a 2 week old girl, so 20 mins is hard to find, but i can figure it. I managed to get new suspension installed over a weekend before the baby came. Priorities!

 

You're in like company, my brother. Many of us have been there and done that, living life in 2-3 hour segments, which actually translates to 20-30min projects when reality sets in.

So back to this thread...

Installed yellow led fogs from Trail Runner. Also bought a used fog light stalk off ebay, and bought an oem relay online.

Fogs do not turn on. Can't figure out what the issue could be, other than a bad stalk. Checked the kick panel and the 15amp fuse is fine.

Any suggestions? Might order a cheap stalk and test it out, but I'd love to hear any other thoughts.

Also, i don't believe it is a resistance issue. No other lights are having issues. If it is a stalk issue, none of the other lights are affected. Pics for reference

 

Did you follow the instructions here on the forum to add the necessary relay, I think in the engine bay? Is there a fuse you need to pop in? Maybe @Fragman or @BluegrapeVr6 can provide some insight.

 

I added the relay behind the fuse panel underneath the steering wheel, but i was not aware there was a 2nd relay to add in the engine bay.

There's not but 1 fog relay, which is the one you inserted.

With no key in ignition to keep noise down(door open chime), if you turn your head lights on and semi stick your head down in the fuse panel area, you should hear the fog relay energize/de-energizing as you rotate fog light switch on/off.

 

Thanks for confirming. I guess it's worth mentioning also, if the high beams are on, or if the truck thinks the high beams are on (because of LED headlights, or whatever), the fog lights won't turn on.

IIRC, they also won't turn on unless the headlights are on? I forget, I know there's something weird with mine where I can't just have the fog lights on, I have to have at least the park lights on or something. So if @Seepick1 maybe disconnected his DRL harness next to the battery, I wonder if that would impact things?

 

That’s reason I mentioned turn headlights on is because A…. they have to be on(low beam) for fog lights to work and B…. in above picture he posted, it appears but can’t really tell but fog light sw was on but head lights off ??

 

I have not unplugged any harnesses of any kind. High beans are no engaged while I am attempting to flip on the fogs.
In regards to truck thinking high beans are on because the lights are LED, does anyone have experience with this, specifically with the trailrunner units? Idk how i'd diagnose that, other than connecting voltmeter while someone kicked on the lights

 

And yes, it is standard on all US vehicles that fogs disengage when high beams are on. Not sure if it's because of state or federal laws limiting forward facing illumination to 4 lights total.
